ROCKVILLE, Maryland (CNN) -- Police in Montgomery County, Maryland, were investigating the shooting of a man Tuesday morning, but it was too early to say whether it was connected to the sniper attacks that have left nine dead and three wounded in the Washington area.

The victim was shot in the chest at a bus stop, authorities said. The shooting was reported at 5:56 a.m. EDT in Silver Spring. It wasn't clear whether the victim was getting on or off the bus when he was shot.

Police in cars and helicopters converged on the scene, which is close to a wooded area. A commuter bus had been pulled over, and some roads were being blocked.

Authorities transported the victim to a trauma center.

The shooting happened in at Grand Pre Road and Connecticut Avenue, an area close to the scenes of several of the previous sniper attacks.

The first six sniper shootings took place in Montgomery County. No one was injured in the first, when a window was shot out at a Michaels craft store October 2. Five people were subsequently killed in the county October 2 and 3.

I drove through a search post this morning. They pulled over a white truck behind me.

Of course, I don't think its a white truck at all, but that's beside the point.

They closed part of the BELTWAY this morning and many roads around it. To give you an idea of this, DC is second only to LA (or first depending on who you believe) for commuter traffic. If a trash bag falls off a truck, traffic backs up for miles. You can't believe what this does around here.

This individual/or people are macking a mockery of the investigation team. The police are in Richmond Va conducting thei rinvestigation, while he is in Montgomery county. basically he is telling them:
"While you are down there, I am where you should be, right where it all started."

I imagine the police are starting to feel helpless in this matter. Do you think the FBI should take the lead in this investigation????

GOOD GOD I hope not.

This is an organization where most of its agents still cant use email or access the internet from their offices here (I tried to sell them on new systems a few years back, thats how I know). They have proved to be bungleriffic on large scale domestic investigations. Even Congress admitted the CIA(!) has been more helpful in the Al Qaeda investigations than the FBI, and that is saying something. I think they are the last thing this investigation needs.

What does it need? I dont know. What it does not need is them taking over.

It is a local issue and the locals should take care of it, if the same thing starts to happen in other cities....then the fed should take over, I don't know the radius of the killings but if it's contained in a 60 mile radius I consider that local. I live outside of Houston (but I consider it Houston) it takes me the same amount of time and mileage to get to Reliant Field to watch the Texas as it takes me to get to Candlestick from my parents house to watch the Niners (and you go thru 7 cities before you get to the bay bridge). My point being that perception is everything. Personally I am getting tired of all the "profilers" & " experts" talking about this on the media. All of their hypothesis are based upon past behavior (typical psych BS), it's painfully obvious that this person is not cut from the same crust. Granted who ever is doing this has some MAJOR problems, but a VERY analytical mind. This one will be a tough one to catch if they ever do. I was raised in Vallejo CA, home of the Zodiac, they still to this day have no idea who that killer is (maybe they do but can't prove it). I am not an expert in the field of serial killers by any means but from what I understand most serial killers do not get caught...they just stop.

bottom line is this jack*ss needs to be stopped :(

This guy could go on forever. I am surprised there haven't been a bunch of copycats popping up.

I am wondering about this "phone message", too. Do you think this guy called them, or that maybe they are trying to smoke the guy out? ("I never called you people!" BING!........Now you have!)

Or he did call, and that bolsters my theory about him wanting to be caught, to be able to "claim his fame".

I would hate to live out there, that for should!

'Your children are not safe'
The task force investigating the Washington-area sniper shootings released a quote from a message left at the scene of a shooting blamed on the sniper on Saturday: "Your children are not safe anywhere at any time." The head of the task force also said it had received a new sniper-related message and would respond soon.

Supposedly, according to "CNN sources," in the latest letter he provided a timeline for future killings. (go to cnns webpage it's there)

I see the sniper is also the master of the obvious. As if we haven't noticed that a dozen people have been shot in the past couple weeks.

They seem safe on third shift! No killing there, yet. Perhaps he works the graveyard some place?

As sickening as this story is, what this Sniper has done is mind boggling. The whole state is looking for him and he just carries on his business. Bang!!!! and then disappears without a trace. I cannot believe he is still on the run.

I believe there are 2 possible scenario's

1) This person is very good. A highly trained expert in the field who knows how the law enforcement works and stays 1 step ahead.

2) The police and other agencies are just totally inadequate and unable to conduct an efficient investigation.

Personally, I believe that the first option is more likely.

People say this is like a movie, I disagree. The movie would have ended by now.

You can be pretty certain there will be a movie about this! Someone always manages to capitolize on this kind of shit.

I don't know how 'smart' the guy needs to be to pull this off, either. It's not like he's walking up to people. He's hiding! You can't have everyone looking at every speck of tree-lined areas 24 hours a day. I would think he would attack in a new area, where no one really expects it.

I also wonder if these 'ransom' demands are from the killer? Seems a little odd, to me. I would be willing to suspect someone else is trying to make a quick buck on this guys coat-tails. Plus....the news reported that the note demanded the money to be placed in a domestic account?????? How the fuk would this jagbag figure to spend any of that loot?

Too many twists and turns, but it is quite interesting, indeed.

Right now MSNBC is reporting that the FBI is investigating an ex-Army soldier who from the Ft. Lewis area in the state of Washington. They are also searching a house in the Tacoma Wash. area for shell casings.
Hopefully they are on to something.

It's without a doubt tragic when people are getting shot meaninglessly -- living in DC, we have seen a number of 'random' bypassers and whatnot that are hit in the midst of a turf war. I figured the guy was a wacko with very little idea of what was going on in life. But if this is some type of 'for profit' series of killings, this guy just jumps off the board as the biggest -- well, I don't even know what to compare him to.... It's really unbelievable that someone would kill so many innocent people for the sake of money. Words can't describe the tragedy that occurs when an innocent person is killed, but to think that a person is killing them for the only purpose of getting money is outright sickening.

We all hope that this is solved as soon as possible. That is surely stating the obvious. But if it happens not to be, I hope that all of you people in Maryland and VA and DC go out to vote in early Novemeber. It's one thing to be afraid, but I feel it's a travesty if this is allowed to affect the very core of our democratic system. Please don't allow one person or a few people to take down the workings of such an important system. I hope voter turnout is higher than expected this year to show this son of a buck that he's a worthless piece of shit.
