This is not a personal attack.

But absolutely the only good anti-virus protection is common sense. I do not run McAfee or Norton or any of those other VIRUSES that claim to be helping. I have not run one in 8+ years with zero viruses. I feel strongly that this is one of the products that uses fear as their primary marketing tool, and it has worked in spades.

Norton and McAfee slow your computer down more than anything I have witnessed.

Something I do believe in are the ad removal programs. If you surf the web, you are getting hit with these items. So it's probably good to do a little clean up every now and then.

Here is something that I think will be altered over the course of the next few years as well. With the huge upswing in Apple desktops, viruses will start being written for them. From what I understand (somewhat limited on Apple's) they are much more exposed due to no history of the need for protection.

Apples are incredible personal computers and are growing in capabilities on the business side. I think with their meteoric rise in popularity, we will probably see more nutjobs (read Melissa's stalker) writing viruses aimed at them.

I have a couple of buds that own a 'puter store, and that's all they use. They say that Norton & McAfee suck balls.

Lot of truth there Dawg--Have taken Noton off all computers now--however do use free version of avast. Could believe the diff on speed--especially start up after axing noton. Does take a little effort to completely remove it however :)

I also use AVG and I agree with DoubleDown...it's awesome! It was recommended to me by the guy who works on my computer and it has been very reliable (and that was a few years ago).
