JEFFERSON CITY ? Law enforcement across central Missouri have been inundated with calls from concerned parents about sighting of suspicious clowns.
Reported menacing clowns in other parts of the country have spawned similar, though unsubstantiated, claims in this area.
Jefferson City Police Captain Doug Shoemaker said social media has fanned the flames of fear.
SSM psychologist Laurel Kramer said the furor might be a combination of people who suffer from coulrophobia, the irrational fear of clowns, and people generally concerned about terrorism and social violence.
Authorities said they will treat the reports seriously and investigate where possible.
The Rolla Police Department took to Facebook to say they've had enough with the clown reports
The Cooper County Sheriff's Office had a similar post.

HOWARD COUNTY, Mo - The Howard County Sheriff's Department says there appears to be no immediate threat to schools after a threat was posted on Facebook.
The threat came from an account named "Aint Clownin Around." It threatened to kidnap students and kill teachers at high schools.
The post comes after three alleged clown sightings in mid-Missouri and reports across the country of people dressed as clowns trying to lure children into wooded areas.
The Howard County Sheriff's Office posted on its Facebook page Thursday acknowledging the post.
It says, "We are working with surrounding agencies and schools to ensure the safety the residents of Howard County. In addition, we ask that anyone who see's suspicious activity please call into the Howard County Sheriff's Office."
The department says there appears to be no immediate threat, but says it takes all such threats very seriously.

Clowns to the left of me clowns to the right of me every fucking day in my city i got clowns behind wheels of cars walking across major intersections looking down at thier phones face booking or sumthing.
YEah i got real Clowns by the hundreds every fucking day.
I would cherish these other clowns in customes weilding a machette at me so i could run em over.
