The spinal cord is surrounded by rings of bone called VERTABRAE.
These bones constitute the SPINAL COLUMN.
In general, the higher in the spinal column the injury occurs, the more dysfunction a person will experience.
The 8 vertabrae in the neck are called CERVICAL VERTABRA.
When cervical spinal cord injury occurs it USUALLY causes loss of function in the arms and legs, resulying in quadriparalysis.

Now,a person can "break their neck"yet not sustain a spinal cord injury if only the bones around the spinal cord(the vertabrae) are damaged, but the spinal cord is not affected.
In these situations the individual MAY NOT EXPERIENCE PARALYSIS AFTER THE BONES HAVE BEEN STABALIZED.
That is why one must NEVER be moved if a serious neck injury has occured.

On the course!
I don't think the break is the cause of the paralysis, but rather damage to the nerves and spinal cord. You can break the vertebrae, and they can be fixed or replaced. (I think) Usually fused, or what not.

Hell, I sure aint no doctor!

Hack & yyz,

Thanks guys. Found out this morning that my friend's ex-wife got in a wreck on the way home from Louisiana and she broke her neck. Received info from my brother that she did not have any spinal damage but lost several pints of blood. She had multiple fractures. They plan on operating on Thursday as soon as she stabilizes.

Thank God she will make it through this alive. They have 2 beautiful kids that need their mother. Please say a prayer for her recovery. Thanks.

if neck is broken above c5 you can have damage to the phrenic nerve which controls breathing......lose that and you are in trouble

All.....

All.....

I stayed with my friend at Brackenridge Hospital last night for some comfort to him trying to keep his mind fresh.....The doctors thought they had stopped the bleeding from the head only to find out that it was building up inside....From what I understand, she is stable and not in shock so she went in last night to have surgery and they found the artery that was bleeding badly in the top right hand side of her forehead...Thank God!! She does have movement in her arms and legs which is a blessing I must say considering the accident that she was involved in.....Her parents are arriving today from Philly because they had to drive down here to Texas....Man this has to be a horrible drive for her mom and dad with all these thoughts going thru their head about their daughter....The accident occured on HWY 71 coming from I-10 in Houston headed towards Bastrop.....My friend just bought her 4 new tires exactly 4 months ago for her pathfinder that she was driving.....Well the accident happened because the TREAD on one of the tires came off which led her to lose control and rollover multiple times landing on the other side of the HWY....The investigator said that the tire was still in tact with only the tread missing.....I think this is very similar to what Firestone went thru...I dont know what brand he had purchased but I do know it was from SEARS.....I will keep everyone updated as these are some very trying moments for this lovong family... GOD BLESS
