Secondary to the point is that I'm switching to AT&T from Verizon for my cell phone because I'm just tired of the hassle of calling Verizon to straighten out my bill. During the conversation with the AT&T rep he said I could get LTE internet for my house for an additional $20/month and it's truly unlimited, no throttling after 22GB.

He said based on my proximity to the tower I should expect 12 MBPS service. I genuinely don't know how fast that is or isn't. I currently have cable internet, but it's really the only option we've had here for years and I am sure the speed is overkill for our usage.

My kid plays Xbox online and the wife rents the occasional movie through DirecTv. Me and my daughter mostly use it for YouTube or Spotify. There are time when we are all online at once. I don't know how much speed we really need

The $20 is $55/mo less than I pay now, but it's worthless if it's not fast enough. Any thoughts on how much speed a household like mine needs?

I have a friend who uses cellular data (A hotspot) in his home and he gets great speeds, enough to play Xbox on.

I tried it. Guy came to the house and hooked it up (which is really a device that looks similar to a cellphone). It didn't get close to the speeds as advertised. Could barely surf the web with it, let alone play Xbox. Xbox wouldn't even work online.

I complained and they said that some areas cannot get high speeds like some others can. Depends on where you live. I had them take it back and I kept Broadband Cable. :0008

I can hit an 8 iron to the tower from my house. Assuming that matters I should get decent speed? I don't know if the 12 mpbs they quoted is the average/max/min though.

12 mbs is like you barely can watch netflix

The list that follows helps make some sense of common Internet speeds.

5 Mbps or less: Basic Web surfing and email
5?10 Mbps: Web surfing and email, with occasional streaming and online gaming, shared among a few connected devices
10?25 Mbps: Moderate high-definition (HD) streaming, online gaming, and downloading files, shared among several connected devices
25?40 Mbps: Heavy HD streaming, online gaming, and downloading, with many connected devices
40+ Mbps: Hardcore streaming, online gaming, and downloading, with a large number of connected devices

I just ran an internet speed test and got 88.22 Mbps. Usually it tests in the 90's but this is close enough.

My cable gets over 200mbps which I have to believe is much more than I need.

Blows mine away. That is sweet. I think mine is faster with some tweaking but this is fast enough and I never bothered. Something about turning my computer off and unplugging my modem router thing to reboot but I never turn my computer off.

When I spent time in Costa Rica last year my speed was from 8-12 and it sucked.

Not my area of expertise but I do know that 200mbs is smoking fast compared to 12mbs - Especially with the number of devices you said you had connected

My opinion would be to spend the extra $55 to keep the speed you have

Good Luck

Likely what is gonna happen. I can try the AT&T one for 15 days and return it if it's not fast enough. I'll give it a try, but my hopes are not high for the results.

My ATT family plan comes with 10gb of hotspot per month, per device. I used it when I first moved waiting to get the new internet setup. Manageable, but not something I'd recommend long term.

I've thought about going with the ATT internet. Anyone with great success?

So, I got the internet access box from AT&T to try out, you get 15 days to return it and I can't honestly believe the speeds this thing is putting out.

I have tested it with multiple speed test sites and at different times of the day. I guess it's because I'm literally less than a few hundred yards from the tower that it's actually working so well.

It's averaging 90+ Mbps download and 25+ Mbps upload. The fastest it has hit is 148 Mbps download and 41 Mbps upload.

I honestly can't tell the difference between this and my cable that costs nearly 4X the price. Obviously the jury is still out and I want to see it if keeps this up for the next two weeks, but right from jump street I'm impressed with it.

Just ran another test before submitting this post 140/46 :scared

I guess it's not available everywhere. If you have an unlimited phone plan you can also get this box which is home phone and internet. I don't use it for phone.

Here's a youtube link for the exact unit we have right now:

Maybe check with your local AT&T store and see if you can get it. Depending on how far you are from a tower determines speed, but it's worth looking into for $20/month.
