found out i have small tears in both retinas and the doctor says that at least one of them can be "lasered" as an out-patient patient procedure in the office....he says theres no danger involved...

it`s my "good" eye and i`m a tad hesitant....from what i understand,a tear can be left alone and be fine, but can eventually become a detached retina, and that`s where the real problem`s occur...

thanks..

my regular opthalmologist referred me to this retinal specialist ...so apparently, they`re both seeing the same thing....

what bothers me is that it`s my "good" eye....lol...the other eye apparently has "erm"(epiretinal membrane),a film thats formed in the eye that causes "wavy" vision........i can`t read an eye chart with the bad eye....

that surgery is forthcoming....

but,if i lose sight in the "good" eye, this could jeopardize my ability to drive....and that scares the hell out of me...

i found out i have little tears too about 8 years ago. he didn't mention anything about surgery. maybe i should get checked again. detached retina is a painful thing that i want no part of. i wouldn't worry about the surgery, wease, they have that down pat now.

my mom was scared chitless about getting her cateracts lazered. afterwards she no longer needed glasses and she was wearing glasses when she was in her 30's. she's 78 now, with better eyesight than she ever had

cataract surgery imho is in the top 3 if you could rate the best surgical procedures ever to come about.

So many people get them, and the surgery is so effective, and like Jack says often correct vision. For quality of life, it's probably the best thing ever to come out of the surgical world. It's an amazing procedure.

sorry, wease, I know little to nothing about retinal tears and treatment, but I'm sure it's like the other eye procedures and highly effective.

thanks,bud...i think thats a little different...they`re just taking some film off the lense...the one i`m getting is the one where they create scar tissue to close the tear.....

this guy`s supposed to be the shit......he said that tears don`t necessarily always progress, but,if it were him,he`d definitely have the small tear lasered to ensure that i don`t have a detachment in my future... he said theres little to no concern about the procedure affecting my vision...i hope to hell he`s right...

he said that the "vitreous" solution in the back of the eye can shift or leak....and that the retina pulls away from the eye...if an actual detachment goes untreated,it usually leads to blindness...

he thinks i have a good shot at getting better vision in my bad eye with the surgery he proposes......and i say go for it...

but i wasn`t banking on any problems with my good eye...that came as a shock...

i love german shepherds, but i wasn`t planning on needing one.....

laser today,i believe around 3:30... :scared

hopefully,i`m just being a drama queen....

Do you guys have floaters? I have those bad. I think those are from your retina pulling away?

Best of luck Wease, you will be fine but always scary when they are messing with your eyes. My bro-in-law just had retinal detachment surg last week. He only has one eye due to an accident as a kid, scary stuff. Has a big bubble in his eye that will be there for 6-8 weeks. :scared

thanks,bud.....i saw the doctor yesterday and that`s what he wants to do with my bad eye....inject a bubble in there...

the doctor said that i`ll be forced to keep my head facing downward for a full week(insert b.j. jokes here) so that the bubble stays in place and heals the hole in my retina(with the exceptiion of eating and going to the bathroom).....

and he said that i probably wouldn`t have much vision in that eye for a month or more...just like your brother..
he also said that 10% don`t get a full closure of the hole in one surgical procedure,so another procedure is a possibility...

as for the tear in my good eye, apparently it isn`t so bad that it has to be done immediately....or maybe ever...that jives with what jackson said about his doctor leaving his tear alone....that only gets done if i decide to go with the surgery on the bad eye as a "prophylactic"(lol) measure....i guess that means that he`s doing a preemptive strike to ensure that i`ll still have at least one eye....

if i don`t do the surgery, maybe the bad eye stays like it is(bad vision is better than no vision)....or maybe it gets progressively worse...no way of knowing...

worst case scenario is that it eventually turns into a detachment and then the odds on a good prognosis get a bit longer...

i know your brother must be scared shitless...a tough situation...i wish him all the best.....if you don`t mind, lemme know how he makes out....

and thanks i.o. and imf for the kind words(imf...you`re a piece of work..lol)...
