Anyone ever have a pinched nerve in your back

I'm not positive this is what I did but I'm thinking it could be. I was working out two weeks ago on my rear lats and was going a little too heavy. Felt a bad pain in my back in between my shoulder blades somewhere near my spine. I had to leave the gym because of the pain. It was a little sore for a few days but I got a massage and it's been feeling a little better although I can still feel it.

What I've started noticing in the past week is that my left hand(mainly pinky and ring finger) are numb and or tingling. From what I've read it sounds like I may have pinched a nerve but I've never had this happen so I don't know if that's what I did or not.

Anyone ever pinched a nerve?

sounds like you might be herniated out a little in your neck or as you said have a "pinched nerve".

your pinky and ring finger on just one hand would be a herniation at the C8 nerve root level (below the C7 vertebrae). You could have possibly done that lifting too heavy and especially since u felt a really bad pain up in that area.

It could also be an ulnar nerve problem/entrapment issue. That's more common with desk jockeys (ooh, that's a bad word), but it can easily be caused by stressing the elbows or by leaning on an elbow all the time. I think people who body build and lift weights also get this, but probably in a different exercise than you described. Maybe you had a pulled or strained muscle since you had the really sharp pain that was subsequently helped by a massage and the ulnar nerve problem in addition?? If it's an ulnar nerve problem, the best treatment is to not lift for several weeks and ice that left elbow frequently. There are also some therapeutic exercises that will help. (I just asked my wife and she called them Ulnar Nerve Glides) She also said that by no lifting, that means not just weights but something as simple as a WalMart bag. She also said you don't want to fully extend that arm, make a fist, or fully contract that arm.

I can think of one more thing, but I'm not even going to list it because it sucks even worse and you probably don't have it. :D

Have you taken anti-inflammatory medicine? That should.

This is also not the best way to try to diagnose a problem, and I probably shouldn't even do it, but I want to help. :) You probably should go see your doctor very soon if this does persist.

also, a chiropractor might be able to help if you're willing to try that. A good chiropractor will also make you get x-rays before he starts adjusting since you are describing an injury, and while that's not an MRI, it might show enough to warrant a follow-up MRI. X-rays could also show nothing and you still have a problem. :shrug:

I was doing a rear lateral raise and yes I was going too heavy, it was the last set of an 8 week program I've been on and I pushed it too far.


Six, desk jockey could be it. I do work at desk all day but my reasoning for thinking it was from my workout was because of the timing. I'm going to give it another week and if it's not any better I'll go get someone to look at it. All of my docs are also my clients and I hate giving them money they've given me back to them. :SIB

I've always been scared to go the Chiro route. I really don't like the idea of anyone "adjusting" my back.

rearrange your desk, and don't lean on that elbow any. Do you use your computer mouse left handed too?

lots of people are, but they do help. Sounds like you know enough people to get a referral for a good one. Some of the MDs around here are actually referring a little to the chiropractors too. That was unheard of 15 years ago when I started working. I'm skeptical of the chiros that claim to be able to fix ear infections and an assortment of other maladies, but for spine health, etc, they can really do the trick. I would go all the time if it wasn't cost-prohibitive to me.
