Vanished into vortex
Before the usual crowd chimes in, yes, I have searched for an answer and am not getting a clear one.

We have several Alexa devices in the house and use them for a number of things so I'm pretty familiar with how they work. My question is around the Alexa Show that can be used for video calling. I'd like to put one in my house and one in my mother in law's apartment so my wife can check in on her. MIL is elderly and doesn't get around well, she's already had a case of falling out of bed and laying on the floor all night because she couldn't get to a phone.

Her being able to holler out to Alexa to call us when she can't reach the phone would put us much more at ease. We like the drop in feature where my wife can check up on her when he don't hear from her or she isn't answering the phone.

We have several smartphones in my house, but my mother in law does not have one. I know one is needed to set up the device, but does she have to have one to use the calling and drop in features?

If one is required does it need to be cellular active? Meaning, I have several old iphone 6's/7's that I can put on wifi for her if the device just needs a contact list to access. Mother in law has high speed wifi.

Can I make this work without her having a smartphone?

Hey Penguin? Wondering if this might work for you. Until very recently, you had to have a smart phone to utilize the "Alexa app" to set up your Alexa Echo to call, inbound or outbound. You now can set up your contacts on Alexa.Amazon.com and works pretty well. I'm paralyzed from the neck down, and set this up couple weeks back, works pretty well for me. I can answer incoming calls, and make outbound calls as well. Good luck.
