On the course!
Another suggestion:

Just have a repairman look at it. He can rub it, and twist it, and apply some oil. Maybe turn a wrench or two, and get it started again. He will probably tell you that you need several more visits, but you will have use of your system.

Have him come see you a couple times a week and repeat the process, to make certain it keeps running.

I will repeat myself again.....Buy it at Costco, NO time limit on returns. Had a HP printer for 3 years and it didn't work so I took it back. Had a digital camera for 1.5 years and took it back. I am telling you, no questions asked. Actually I think they are crazy????

Cost on an a/c unit will very greatly by size (tons) and seer rating (effieciency) without that info it's hard to tell you what is a good price. If your just replacing the condensing unit only and not the furnace should only take 4-8 hour to install. As long as they can use the existing piping and wiring. If you give me more info I'll tell you if your get screwed. http://www.trane.com/Residential/SelectSystem/SelectSystem.asp

I know more about this subject than I would like to - lving in TX: http://www.amstd-comfort.com/Home.asp is the best unit I have had. 10 yrs. parts and labor. Research SEER and sqft. of dwelling vs. tonnage. In regards to the tonnage do no think more is better, what matters is how the moisture is removed from the dwelling. E.g. if you have a 1300 sqft. dwelling and a 5 ton unit - the air will be cold but will still feel warm due to the removal of the moisture to fast. the site above has decent data. Got mine in the house done - replaced the condensor and the plenum for 4500 - 5 ton unit.

sportsnut and ryson thanks for the info. tomorrow I'm gonna go in to the building and find out the size unit I need and let you know I got quoted 4400 buy a guy who went in on sat and told me the motor died but could replace that for 500 but that the unit is over 20 years old and probably better off just replacing it. Then the ahole makes a stupid comment "its only 4400 just a down payment on another mercedes" and that really pissed me off it doesnt matter how much or how little dough you got don't make a comment like that. Makes me feel like hes trying to screw me!!!
