Really good documentary on the history of the worlds economies throughout the 20th and into the 21st century. It is about 6 hours long and 3 discs but I couldn't wait for netflix to send me each new installment. I honestly can't think of anybody that wouldn't like this series. Wondering if anybody else has seen it or if you guys are looking for something to fill up your queue

Never seen it or heard of it, and I like to think I'm a Documentary junkie. The 6-hour thing sounds a bit intimidating, but I'll keep an eye out for it.

Have you ever seen Fog of War? It is a documentary about Robert McNamara. Really good stuff.

Matt: Where were you when I needed you in the MadHot Ballroom thread? I could have used an endorsement there.....but you were nowhere to be found.

lol- wtf is the 'madhot ballroom thread?'
I think it's near that 'Bob's pick of the week' thread that Sponge always bragged about. ....I wouldn't know first hand, but I guess there's a lot of threads going on outside of the political forum.

I did see Fog of War and found it very well done and very interesting as well. Have you seen "Enron: Smartest Guys in the Room" ? It is another documentary that I would rec.

No, I haven't. Something about that movie seemed a bit cheesy. However, I did read the book Conspiracy of Fools by Kurt Eichenwald which is all about the Enron scandal. Absolutely fascinating stuff. I read it this time last year and couldn't believe how Andy Fastow effed that company (an all its employees) over. Based on what I read, I would have given Kenny Lay a pass.

Thanks for the lead. I've seen 2 of the 3 DVD's now. Excellent stuff.

Lay did get a pass in that book that I haven't seen in others and as the book was based on calendars, emails and notes, it's probably more "legit" than others. I've seen many CEOs who couldn't care less about the accounting and were always looking for the next deal. But it doesn't excuse the ignorance.

And, not to be an accounting geek (oops, too late), but what I found the most interesting about the book is that, if Texas recognized gay marraige, the bogus accounting would have never held up under anybody's rules and Enron would still be humming along today (maybe).

What's this all about, Chips?

I have only the most cursory knowledge about the whole Enron thing and have not read any books or watched any movies on the subject.

Thanks.

Last book I read was 'how to fix a chain link fence'. I don't want to give away the ending but spacing and stretching had big roles.

Kinda hard to explain. Fastow's main partner in crime was Michael Kopper. Kopper's "domestic partner" was put in as a majority owner in an entity designed to absorb Enron debt and it didn't need to be classified on Enron's balance sheet because it was owned by an unrelated third party. Had Kopper's wife (not that he had one) done the same deal, it wouldn't have been able to be classified off on Enron's books (it shouldn't have anyway, but any argument would have been entirely wrong)

As soon as you finish "Audacity of hope" read the book - it's even on CD - it's a great story.
