My doctor just told me I have to take nose spray everyday for the rest of my life because of my sinuses and allergies, I don't feel like I need it but I'll follow what the doc says, I was wondering.....does anyone else on here have to take meds daily or weekly for the rest of your life for anything???

There are many folks that take meds every day. It's all that keeps them alive. I have same problem close to yours. No real big deal. You will handle ok . Be thankful they didn't say. Take this heart bill every day. Or you may not make the day. Then you start to worry a little more. How old are you any way. You are for real asking do people have to take meds every day.

I would definately seek a second opinion. A lot of nose sprays are steroids and may not be good for you over the long haul.
I'm not a naturalist but my sisters and my wife are heavily into altenative medicine. There might be some aromatherapy meds that could help your condition. I've used some alternative meds with excellant success and others with no success. Its worth a shot if your doctor wants you to be on nose spray for the rest of your life.
Good luck.

The doc said I have pollups in my nose cavity, and said to keep it under control, I need to take nose spray every day forever....do any of you or someone you know have the same diagnosis(pollups) in the nose, and what did the doc prescribe?? I figure if the nose spray can take it away, I'd be off of the spray, so I'm curious why I'd have to take it forever, unless it's something that never goes away. Anyone?

34399,

I'm a doc, and rarely say forever for meds, without a good reason. I think your doctor is emphasizing that the kind of inhaled corticosteroid spray (probably Rhinalar, Flonase, Rhinacort or Nasacort), does not fix things quickly. It takes a few weeks for any effect on hay fever, and much longer for polyps. I think you are reasonable in your thoughts of trying for 6 months or a year, then using antihistamines intermittently after this...

If the problems persist, you may indeed be on these for life.

Very little of these inhaled nasal "steroids" are absorbed into the rest of your system, so the systemic side effects are non-existent, as much as we can ever say this...Neemer (a pharmacist) may have figures on the systemic effects.

cheers

Once you have polyps in your nose, when does the doc decide when to have surgery to take them out and when does the doc decide to just stay on the spray??

My thought would be that if they shrink in size, and you don't have too many further sinus infections, then surgery shouldn't be necessary. Remember, that they are a response to chronic inflammation, and that even after a surgery, you will likely need some treatment to keep the inflammation at bay, and not have the polyps return.

So, bottom line is that you will likely need antihistamines (or a major change of scenery) +/- the nasal spray for a long time even if you opted for surgery...
