Outright plays (1.5pts):

Craig Parry to win 33/1 e.w. @ SkyBet, Victor Chandler and Paddy Power
Parry disappointed when finishing 32nd as a selection for the Heineken Classic last week, but I suppose it was his first start of the season and he may have been a little ring-rusty. This week he can drive to the course from his home in Sydney and that has to be an advantage. He also has a decent record in this format, having finished 2nd two years ago at The Lakes, also near to his home. So there is good reason to expect a much better performance this week.

Nick O'Hern to win 33/1 e.w. @ SkyBet and Victor Chandler
Parry finished 2nd in this format two years ago and O'Hern finished 2nd last year. He was also 11th two years ago as well to confirm his liking for this format/event. Like Parry, he has started 2004 slowly, but he has improved in each of his events so far and finished 16th last week. Not the best player at closing out for the win, but he should be in contention on Sunday.

Peter Fowler to win 40/1 e.w. @ Stan James
Fowler is a good player for outrights. It might be a few years since his last win, but he tends to finish well out of contention or in the top-10. In the last year, he has played 29 times, finishing in the top-10 on 9 occasions, but between 11th and 20th only once. He ended his 2003 season with back-to-back top-10 finishes and finished 3rd last week. Buoyed by an 11th place finish in this format last year, he should certainly fancy his chances of securing another high finish this week.

Matchup plays (1.5pts unless stated):

Peter O'Malley to beat Scott Gardiner -111 @ Stan James [3 pts]
This might not be the format to suit the 'fairways-and-greens' O'Malley, but he has finished ahead of Gardiner in both of the events in Australasia this year bring the total of top-15 finishes in this region to five in his last six starts. On only one of those occasions has Gardiner finished ahead of O'Malley, so despite the format, this should be a win for the senior player.

Jarrod Moseley to beat Gareth Paddison -120 @ William Hill and Easybets [3 pts]
Paddison looks in good form having won the Victorian Open on the Von Nida Tour three weeks ago and finishing 7th in the Heineken Classic last week, but he may find it difficult to lift himself after being the forgotten man of the final round group that included Els and Scott on Sunday. Moseley is a much better player with a 3-1-0 h2h lead on this Tour over the past three months and class should prevail.

Craig Parry to beat Raphael Jacquelin -110 @ Bet365
Opposed Jacquelin last week because of his poor record in Australia and he continued it with a withdrawal after an opening 75 last week. No qualms about opposing him again, particularly with an outright selection.
(also available at Expekt)

Wade Ormsby to beat Hennie Otto -125 @ Five Dimes
Did start the season by backing Otto on a couple of occasions, but he certainly merits opposition now. After finishing 16th in his opening event of the season, he has since finished 64th, mc and mc. He has played in Australia three times and missed the cut every time. Straightforward match with Ormsby having played on this Tour in the 2002 New South Wales Open (he finished 37th) and looking to be one of the best rookies on the European Tour this season.

Between Green Bay and Iowa City
Horizons Golf Resort: This review by a paying patron seems in harmony with my review of the hole-by-hole descriptions (on a website which has apparently crashed this morning, as I can't get a working link): "The course is flat and easy to walk, but it is not easy to play, despite not being as long as some. Length is not the source of the challenge here. . . . The fairways are links-style, with lots of bumps and hollows. They were in good, but not great condition, but the couch grass gave a good lie every time . . . The greens are definitely resort-style, with huge surfaces, often split into two or even three tiers, and a few swales and humps. The surfaces themselves were perfect to putt on, and held a well-struck shot easily . . .The challenge lies in keeping the ball in play, and then placing it in the correct areas for scoring. The fairways are fairly wide, but there is no rough, only scrub, hazards or out of bounds if you spray the ball . . .If successful in keeping it in play, you then need to pay attention to the pin positions, as long putts over all sorts of humps, swales and level changes can make two putts impossible from the wrong place."

OUTRIGHTS:

So, a resort course with which I am totally unfamiliar that apparently features lots of multi-tiered greens, a scoring format that rewards birdies, and an entourage around Ms. Davies in the midst of a low-wattage field, leads me to my first principles at the start of the season of letting the action come to me instead of coming out swinging for the fences.

Greg Owen(45/1) for 0.50* e.w. @ 5 dimes

Jean Van de Velde(125/1) for 0.40* e.w. @ Bet365

MATCHUPS:

Owen(+125) over Pearce/Ferrie (1st Round) for 1* @ Bet365

Gallacher(-125) over Karlsson (Tournament) for 1* @ 5 dimes

Adding (3 units):

Paul Casey to beat Michael Campbell +103 @ Pinnacle
This line has moved eleven cents in the last 24 hours and after just thinking about it yesterday, I'll wade in today. Pinnacle are the only ones (of 19) to favour Campbell; most have this matchup at pick'em or with Casey the favourite. While Cambo was obviously less affected last week by his operation on his legs than expected, his form and health are still questionable and it is notable that he had previously skipped this event and its stableford format. It is very well-suited to Casey's attacking style and at this price, he is worthy of attention.

3rd Round:

Webster(-120) over Hedblom (ties push) for 1* @ Bet365
". . . managing his game and his emotions like a Big Dog" . . . Part II . . . with a tailor made format and a course that is about the same . . . is the progression one step back or another stride forward?

Bloody Sunday. F*ck.

MATCHUPS:

Webster(-115) over Flanagan for 1* @ 5dimes
I've been expecting signs that Webster would find a way to win since he put himself in position on Thursday. I don't think he wins if he loses this matchup.

Outrights - Final update: 0-3; -4.50 pts

Parry 49th
O'Hern 6th
Fowler 8th

Yet another sickener! O'Hern had been the first round leader and and encouraging stayed in the top-two throughout the event before taking the lead on the front nine in the final round. But he shoots 3-over-par to surrender not only the lead, but also a top-5 place! Fowler hung around the top-10 all weekend, but couldn't get in the top-5. Another no return from a promising event.

Matchups - Final update: 2-3-0; -4.07 pts

O'Malley/Gardiner LOST by 8
Moseley/Paddison LOST by 17
Parry/Jacquelin WON by 3
Ormsby/Otto LOST by 1
Casey/Campbell WON by 9

Poor result. Successfully opposed Otto who missed the cut, but didn't expect Ormsby to do the same. Sums up this event.
