Sorry Bettingmad :p

I wish they could make their minds up - which courses to play which events on:shrug:

Who is defending champion - Lonard or Baddeley?

Oh and just for good measure we'll change it to a Stableford scoring event :moon:

Again will be keeping this low key - one early bet on Trevor Immelman - good results the last few weeks and always capable of making plenty of eagles (3 last week) 66/1 with this weeks chief benefactor Sporting Odds

Ian,
You only won because I let you.... :p
Thought you might have gone for your old mate Scotty Laycock, I know you find that Christian name irresistible....

Have to row in with the usual suspects here.... Popeye Parry and Leaney, I cannot leave them out just because the prices are worse this week... currently sniffing round to try beat WHill 14/1 & 20/1.

(edit1: Found 33/1 Leaney at S James, satisfied with that. His course form is not brilliant 24/41/mc/21 but his recent form is much better 9/2/mc/6 )
(edit2: 16/1 Parry at Ladbrokes)

I would say Baddeley is more like a defending champion than Lonard. The Racing Post got confused before Christmas, awarding Lucas Parsons an Australian Open title as the venue had changed. The new Australian tour schedule will take some getting used to this year....

Other selection for the week is Smail - played better than he has done for a while last week and had a good finish here last year - I don't know why but he is one of those players who scores lots of eagles with chip ins etc and could get a few nice 5 pointers 66/1 Coral or Hills

Outright plays

Outright plays

Outright plays:

Craig Parry to win 14/1 e.w. @ Surrey or BetInternet
Winner of the New Zealand Open four weeks ago, in the top-15 in the two events since, top-15 in each of the last three seasons in the Greg Norman International on this course and the winner of that event in 1995 in the previous occasion it was played here. With that record, he should be heading the market.

Peter O'Malley to win 25/1 e.w. @ Bet365
O'Malley was the only player who looked like staying with Els last week and he should welcome this week's venue. He is a member of The Lakes golf club and allegedly regularly plays in weekly competitions here with the members when he is in town. A big price for a quality player in form and on his home course.

Aaron Baddeley to win 25/1 e.w. @ Simon Bold or Centrebet
The winner of last year's Greg Norman International on this course, he is as close to a defending champion as anyone in this inaugural event. Seems to be on the mend from illness last week and with 16/1 the general price, I'll take the attacking young Australian at Simon Bold/Centrebet's offerings.

72-hole plays

72-hole plays

Geoff Ogilvy to beat Paul Gow -118 @ Easybets [2 units]
Both came back from three weeks on the PGA Tour to play in last week's Heineken Classic. Both missed the cut and were probably suffering from jet-lag, but Gow's effort of 78-83 was 14 shots more than Ogilvy. He has missed all fours cuts this year and Ogilvy has beaten him in every event. It should continue this week.

Roger Wessels to beat Jean Hugo -118 @ Easybets [3 units]
Before last week's missed cut, Wessels had finishes of 9/10/27 this season, whereas Hugo has missed all three cuts since his opening event. With no course history either, Wessels is the straightforward choice.

Roger Wessels to beat Carl Pettersson -125 @ Centrebet
Finishes of 33/22/51/39 are competent, but not at the same level as at the end of last year. Pettersson returns to a course where he shot 73-78 last year and there would appear to be no reason why he should break out of his mid-table rut.

Adding another player after 1st round - wanted to see how Ogilvy coped with a late tee time this week and he did not do badly at +7 points - he keeps getting left behind at the start with a late tee time so I will now play him at 66/1 Blue Square

Mid-point update

Mid-point update

Ogilvy/Gow WON by 17
Wessels/Hugo Leads by 2
Wessels/Pettersson Trails by 7

Parry 3rd
O'Malley 18th
Baddeley 65th

Decent position in the matchups and two of three outright selections in contention. Leaderboards can change very fast with this modified stableford format though.

I think Andre Stolz is a decent bet going into the final round of this event. He holds a 2 pt lead and most books have him around $5.00 (which I believe should be more like $3.75).

Anything could happen especially with Stableford scoring but he does seem like good value.

Re Stolz
Must admit to thinking the same of his 12/1 quotes yesterday.... but his form last year was so poor... too late for me now... will sit it out with Popeye... the Brutus could be Laycock, tossed him out at the start in favour of missed cut Leaney.

A lot is made of this stableford system but I just consider each 2 points as one shot off the lead... the only real advantage is with an eagle gaining the extra 1pt.. but there are not that many of them. Personally I think it should be at least 20 points for a hole in one:)

Popeye made a helluva run but couldn't put it together on 18 to catch the Swede. Laycock and Stolz played a strong 4th - can't say the same for O'Malley. I didn't see what happened to him, but I'd be willing to wager it was flat stick related...

Final update

Final update

Matchups: 1-2-0; -2.79 units

Wessels/Hugo LOST by 6
Wessels/Pettersson LOST by 7

Outrights: 1-2; -0.75 units

Parry 2nd
O'Malley 44th
Baddeley 53rd

Disappointing performance by the 'Dodger' to lose both his matchups, particularly after Hugo had only made the cut virtue of a very late birdie on Friday. Parry finished one birdie short of victory and O'Malley had reached the top-5 at the start of the last round, but then disappeared from view.
