Having read the frustrations of bettors over their Under losses in both the MNF and tonight's game, I thought it might be interesting to discuss the 'Under' bet and why in my opinion it is the most difficult bet there is for the average bettor. I stopped betting them a couple years ago, not so much because of a bad record w/ them (but I'm sure there were a losing prop for me overall), but because they are the most frustrating bet mentally for many reasons-
1. At least with sides, and Overs, you for the most part have at least an outside chance of covering games that you think you may have lost early on. Not so with Unders. Once the game has gone Over the total, be it the 2nd inning or 3rd quarter, you've lost- done, fini, period.
2. Unders are for the most part a full game worry. Now sure you can say the same for Sides and Overs, but for me I almost always have some Sides and Overs that I don't need to 'sweat out' occasionally. An Under it seems is almost always in doubt until the final few minutes or seconds of a game.
3. Unders have to be the king of bad beats- from baseball bullpens to Foul-a-thons in the last few minutes of basketball games to prevent defenses in football- what seemed to be a winning Under bet can go up in smoke for reasons you can't factor into handicapping. I guess maybe Hockey totals may be a little more resistant to these premises.
Like I said- personally I hate them and perhaps it limits my betting opportunities, but I have to say I'll gladly accept backdoor covers on Sides or failed Over wagers over a losing Under wager any day.
Anyone else feel like this?
