One week after #16 Virginia Tech had its way with the Indians, head coach Steve Roberts isn?t looking for any sympathy for himself or his team. He just wants to get back on the field.

?We?re proud of the kids and they way they bounced back this week,? Roberts said at his Little Rock press conference. ?If you came looking for a sob story you came to the wrong place.?

Roberts said that the players have been working hard all week and want a chance to show they are a better team. He added that the priority this week has been working on ?ball security football,? saying that ASU could not beat any team with the mistakes made last week against Virginia Tech.

Elliot Jacobs will get the start for ASU and Roberts makes no promises about how much action fellow sophomore Josh Driscoll will see. He said that the staff will make the decision on whether Driscoll will see action based on the flow of the game. Senior QB Tommy Miller is not expected to be cleared to play quarterback until after the Tulsa game but they do hope to be able to use him as the holder on placekicks.

Roberts said that Jacobs performance against Va. Tech had impressed the staff. Jacobs graded out at 79% for the game. He added that on the touchdown pass to Cox that Jacobs had made the right call to audible out of the called play and to switch to a silent snap count. Jacobs showed poise when the rush was on Roberts said. More impressive though was the fact that Tech had its original eleven starters on the field for the play.

Last season the ASU defense struggled most of the season. Roberts said that the defensive players are especially proud that they recorded two sacks against Virginia Tech because the defense had no sacks in the first six games of 2001.

Preparing for San Jose State though presents some challenges for the Indians. The Spartans have replaced their defense with a large number of juco transfers and on offense few starters return and of those who return, their QB Arroyo has been beaten out for the starting job. To make the job more interesting the game film ASU has is of games SJSU played against West Coast teams running completely different offensive and defensive schemes from ASU making it difficult to guess how SJSU will react to different looks.

Roberts said that he does expect SJSU to concentrate on trying to break big plays using a wide variety of formations and looks. He said that they run a lot of reverses, double reverses, counters, traps and draws to mislead the defense.
