Sorry that I did not reply sooner.
First, the bad news. Tunica is out in the middle of freakin' no where. I mean, this place might as well be on the moon. Whatever casino you are in, there is nothing to do in the area except gamble (horrors!). While I was there -- I needed to get a presciption filled and had to drive 17 miles to the nearest drug store in Southhaven, a Memphis suburb. I mean, this place is completely off the map. That's fine if you just want to play cards and nothing else, but forget any of the "area" attractions. There aren't any.
Another downside is that most of the casinos are not within walking distance to each other. The exception is the Gold Strike-Horseshoe-Ramada which are strung together. As far as the Mississippi River, there is not much to see. You can make out the water line from a high room in the tower, but forget walzing down to the riverfront and taking a walk. It's just no possible unless you want to trek through swamps.
The good news is that this is by far the freindliest group of locals I have ever played with (Biloxi comes close). The rake is $3 and you can eat free at the Horseshoe with a food comp (food served from snack bar). The restaurants are always full on weekends, so you may need to eat during off peak periods. The Chinese Restaurant at Binion's is very good, and th steak house is pricey, but excellent. Coffee shop at Gold Strike is pretty good, but te menu is limited. There is also a small food court at the Gold Strike. Forget the Ramada -- I ate over there twice and both meals were abysmal.....I also have a thing againt patronizing any casino that doesn't offer poker, and the Ramada is nothing but a flophouse for slot idiots. Unless you like tripping over swarms of tourists, stay away.
The Horseshoe and Gold Strike both have excellent poker rooms, with lots of loose play. The limits go up to $20-40 at the Shoe (with pot-limit occasionally), while $6-12 is th biggest game you will find at the Gold Strike. In both places, th Omaha High-Low games are marvelous.
I also recommend a visit to te Grand Casino. The poker room there is excellent, and they have tournaments several nights a week. Grand Casinos are always first-rate (this location was once the second largest casino in te world in terms of floor space) and very pro-poker. Trouble with staying at Grand is the hotel is off away from he casino and you have to ride a shuttle bus. Speaking of shuttles, all of the major casinos in the area are linked by a free shuttle bus. But there is no shuttle to and from the airport. That will cost $38 round trip.
My recommendations:
Stay at Gold Strike -- best room value, excellent services
Play a few hours daily at Gold Strike to get room rate $25/night)
Play majority of hours at Horseshoe and Grand
As far as Sams Town and the other TUnica casinos, I did no visit them, so I have no comment.
Also, be sure and take the helicopter ride that is just north of the Horseshoe/Gold Strike. Take the $20 ride (per person), which takes you over som of the casinos and the Mississippi River. Apart from driving to Memphis, that's the only area attraction.
Hope this helps.
