I am going To Tunica in April, the Company I work for has a promo that I win every year. We have always went to Vegas but the Corprate Office has decide that we are only allowed to have 2 trips out side of our region per year. Anyway could you give me a little insite into Tunica as I know you are there playing in a poker tournament. I.E good places to play, number of shills at poker tables, cool pit bosses, and anyother info that you think I need to know. I go to Veags at least 2 times per year. I used to be a Chef in WY and would go over to Dogwood SD and I hated it. I am hoping that Tunica is not the same type of place.

Tunica

I'm not Nolan, but i know lots about Tunica.

If you've never been, It's like nowwhere else. driving through the delta, looking at mississippi mud when all of a sudden you come across about 12 casinos. The best is by far the Horseshoe: food, hotel, gambling, poker room, ect... The Grand runs a close second and Gold Strike is third. All of these have poker rooms, the Grand has folks trying to make a living, Gold Strike's is small, and Horseshoe is Jack Binion's need i say more. Memphis is only 35 mins from casinos to get your big city fill.

Any other questions...

Stupid Questions like where is the best bar to hang out at. Best restuarant for good cajun food. Is the Horseshoe the best placed to get comped? What is the "thing not to miss"? in Tunica. I am sure that we will go to Memphis at least one night. Is there a decent show, I have looked at the websites and it seems that they have alot of country acts that come to town.
thanks for your help.
Do they have three card poker tables at the horseshoe?

Well Chef, there aren't any bars in tunica other than ones at the casinos. Yes, the horseshoe is probably the best at comping with the grand a close second. There are four three card poker tables, they are my favorite:D . As for shows, the sheraton, which is next to the horseshoe, has an "x" rated hypnotist which is real funny(nobody gets naked, but they do some crazy things). There is plent of things to do in memphis: grizzlies, red birds, Rendevous, folks folly ect... Mabeye we could meet up at the three card tables when you get there.

That would be great

I would love to hang out at a three card table with you, as time gets closer and I am positive of the dates. I will get back with you in the forum. I think that we are going the first weeked in April. I wont know if I won the trip for two weeks, but I am in first place and they are taking ten with one week left in the contest. So it looks really good at this point.

Sorry that I did not reply sooner.

First, the bad news. Tunica is out in the middle of freakin' no where. I mean, this place might as well be on the moon. Whatever casino you are in, there is nothing to do in the area except gamble (horrors!). While I was there -- I needed to get a presciption filled and had to drive 17 miles to the nearest drug store in Southhaven, a Memphis suburb. I mean, this place is completely off the map. That's fine if you just want to play cards and nothing else, but forget any of the "area" attractions. There aren't any.

Another downside is that most of the casinos are not within walking distance to each other. The exception is the Gold Strike-Horseshoe-Ramada which are strung together. As far as the Mississippi River, there is not much to see. You can make out the water line from a high room in the tower, but forget walzing down to the riverfront and taking a walk. It's just no possible unless you want to trek through swamps.

The good news is that this is by far the freindliest group of locals I have ever played with (Biloxi comes close). The rake is $3 and you can eat free at the Horseshoe with a food comp (food served from snack bar). The restaurants are always full on weekends, so you may need to eat during off peak periods. The Chinese Restaurant at Binion's is very good, and th steak house is pricey, but excellent. Coffee shop at Gold Strike is pretty good, but te menu is limited. There is also a small food court at the Gold Strike. Forget the Ramada -- I ate over there twice and both meals were abysmal.....I also have a thing againt patronizing any casino that doesn't offer poker, and the Ramada is nothing but a flophouse for slot idiots. Unless you like tripping over swarms of tourists, stay away.

The Horseshoe and Gold Strike both have excellent poker rooms, with lots of loose play. The limits go up to $20-40 at the Shoe (with pot-limit occasionally), while $6-12 is th biggest game you will find at the Gold Strike. In both places, th Omaha High-Low games are marvelous.

I also recommend a visit to te Grand Casino. The poker room there is excellent, and they have tournaments several nights a week. Grand Casinos are always first-rate (this location was once the second largest casino in te world in terms of floor space) and very pro-poker. Trouble with staying at Grand is the hotel is off away from he casino and you have to ride a shuttle bus. Speaking of shuttles, all of the major casinos in the area are linked by a free shuttle bus. But there is no shuttle to and from the airport. That will cost $38 round trip.

My recommendations:

Stay at Gold Strike -- best room value, excellent services
Play a few hours daily at Gold Strike to get room rate $25/night)
Play majority of hours at Horseshoe and Grand

As far as Sams Town and the other TUnica casinos, I did no visit them, so I have no comment.

Also, be sure and take the helicopter ride that is just north of the Horseshoe/Gold Strike. Take the $20 ride (per person), which takes you over som of the casinos and the Mississippi River. Apart from driving to Memphis, that's the only area attraction.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys

Waregale,
I will get back to when time gets closer. The contest ended today with the results being posted in about a week. I had a record sales week, this week so I should be fine. I can not imagen that i would fall 10 spots. I will keep you posted.
