AUBURN (-8) vs Ole Miss
Don't let the blow out against Lousiana Monroe <73-7> fool you. The coaches were irritable after the game and spoke out publicly how Auburn was not able to accomplish anything in the slaughter of a horrible team. With a wide receiver playing quarterback and a couple blocked attempts by Auburn's special team the score was one sided early on. Cambell was only allowed 13 pass attempt when 30+ was the target. However, Auburn's consist inconsistency plays right into this game as they have owned Ole Miss at home:
Auburn hosts Ole Miss in a meeting of SEC Western Division foes. Auburn holds a 20-7 all-time series lead, including a 9-1 advantage in Jordan-Hare Stadium.
The Tigers have won 33 consecutive games (21 under Tuberville) when scoring 30 or more points.
Auburn has rushed for two or more touchdowns in 16 of its last 22 games.
Since the start of the 2002 season, Auburn is seventh nationally in rushing touchdowns with 56 and 17th in rushing yards with 4,355.
The game will be Auburn's fifth this season against a ranked team. Auburn has faced five ranked teams in five of the last six seasons (1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003).
Junior quarterback Jason Campbell is 16-7 (.696) as a starter, which is fourth among SEC signal callers (min. 10 starts) in victories and winning percentage. Campbell is 11-3 as a starter in SEC games.
Auburn has won nine of the last 10 meetings and 18 of the last 20 ... Auburn's last shutout came against the Rebels in 1998 (17-0) at Oxford ... This is the 14th consecutive year that the two schools have faced each other ... Saturday will be the second of the last 14 meetings that hasn't come in the month of September ... Last year, the two played on November 2 in Oxford ... The two teams have combined to score 41 or more points in each of the last four meetings with the losing team scoring at least 20 points in three of those games ... Auburn has scored a rushing touchdown in 20 of the last 21 meetings (1999 only exception) in the series ...
The Auburn-Ole Miss game will feature some of the Southeastern Conference's top offensive and defensive units. Ole Miss is first in the SEC in nearly every offensive category, while the Auburn defense is in the top three in the league in every defensive category. The Rebels are seventh nationally in total offense, while the Tigers are fifth nationally in total defense.
Runningback Carnell Williams is the SEC's leader in rushing touchdowns over the last two years with 22, while teammate Ronnie Brown is second with 17. Alabama's Shaud Williams is third with 16.
Carnell Williams ran for 100 yards for the fourth time this season against Louisiana-Monroe. It was the ninth 100-yard game in his career, which is eighth on the school's all-time list. Auburn is 8-1 in contests that Williams rushes for 100 yards.
DEFENSE RANKED FIFTH NATIONALLY
The Tiger defense is ranked fifth nationally in total defense (275.1 ypg) and sixth in scoring defense (13.9 ppg), which are both third in the Southeastern Conference. Auburn is also 14th nationally in rushing defense (92.0 ypg) which is fourth in the SEC statistics.
Senior linebacker Karlos Dansby is proving why he was a First-Team All-American by nearly every preseason publication this season. He leads Auburn in tackles (57), tackles for loss (9), sacks (4) and is tied for the team lead in forced fumbles (2) on passes broken up (5). The Birmingham, Ala., native is second on the squad with four quarterback hurries.
Auburn's defense has been stingy in the first half of its six wins. During those six games, the Tigers have surrendered just 14 points, 25 first downs, 143 rushing yards, and 419 total yards. Opponents have also converted just 5-of-48 third downs in the first half in the Auburn wins.
Auburn's October schedule was not friendly, as the Tigers face three top 10 teams in four weeks, including two on the road. The Tigers defeated No. 7 Tennessee, 28-21, on Oct. 4 and downed No. 7 Arkansas, 10-3, in Fayetteville the following week. After defeating unranked Mississippi State (45-13) in Jordan-Hare Stadium, Auburn fell at No. 9 LSU, 31-7, on Oct. 25, to close the book on the Tigers' October.
UPSET CITY
Auburn has won five straight games over top 10 teams when entering the contest unranked. The Tigers streak includes wins over No. 1 Florida (2001), No. 10 LSU (2002), No. 9 Alabama (2002), No. 7 Tennessee (2003) and No. 7 Arkansas (2003).
WHEN SCORING 20+ POINTS
Under Tommy Tuberville, Auburn is 31-3 when scoring 20 or more points in a game, including a 31-2 mark in the regular season. Dating back to 1995, Auburn is 53-10 when scoring 20 or more points in a game.
30+ POINTS EQUALS VICTORY
Under Tommy Tuberville, Auburn is 21-0 when scoring 30 or more points in a game, including a 11-0 mark in the last two years. Auburn has won 34 consecutive games when scoring 30 or more points in a game. The last time the Tigers lost when registering at least 30 points was a 56-49, four overtime loss to Georgia in 1996. In the last 20 years, Auburn is 96-2 when scoring 30 points.
Although these statistics are lop sided and support the Auburn Tigers, this game has the potential to be close from start to finish, and it will be interesting to see if the Rebels are good enough to win this one on the road. If Ole Miss posts back-to-back victories over Auburn and LSU, it will have an
outstanding shot at reaching a BCS bowl. That is unlikely, however, as the Tigers will probably squeak one out on Saturday.
I'm taking Ole Miss +8 for a small play thinking this game will come down to a late scoring attempt by Manning to try and put it in overtime. Auburn by a touchdown and the win, Ole Miss +8 winning.
