Heyas, I rarely post but have been reading and lurking for over 10 years, much kudos to those who have given me some winners :)

Need some quick advice here. A shorter version of my dilemma...I have a 2009 BMW X5 and recently have had some gear slippage. I tried to blow it off by resetting the computers, downloading new software codes and the like.

Well, the wife talked me into taking it into a certified BMW dealership(in Beverly Hills of all places) to have it checked out, that was a mistake. I have heard that they try to pin new tranny's on most transmission issues and I discovered that first hand. How do I know if it is legit? Many have said the gearbox never needs to be replaced but that is what they suggested. They claimed many tests and diagnostics were ran and it shows my transmission is shot.

Well, it has been a few days now with an occasional "lurch or slip" going from first to second gear but smooth in the rest of gears. The trans failsafe mode has came on only once along with the check engine light, but no other warnings showed up on the computer in the dash.

Today, all the warnings went poof and have not come back. I am afraid to replicate the issue again though, so have been driving extra careful.

We went shopping tonight and found a 2011 Porsche Cayenne, but it is quite expensive. Are we jumping the gun too soon by not getting a second opinion?

The warranty expired 5k miles ago, how convenient right? They are wanting 9k for a new transmission, not including a possible wiring harness, which is an additional 1.2k.

So, here lies my problem....we are still upside down on the SUV, by almost 8k. If we do a fast trade in, we have to put down about 14k due to TTL and payoff difference. They come out close enough to even except we will owe quite a bit more on a new car(and who knows what problems lie ahead with this one).

Coming up with the 14k is going to hurt, maybe doable, but it is going to hurt because it will be cash, not on credit cards.

Need some input please, especially from mechanics

Should I go to an outside mechanic for another estimate and is 9k way, way too much for this?? Even if they say they can repair for 6k, that is still too much IMO, maybe time to dump it.

you own a very expenisive luxury car so the cost for any repairs are double .

I would try just a trans specialist a small 1 owner shop 1st and say yu want detailed printt out of diagnostics report that will cost about $100 to $200 no more! Also when it's hot pull out the dipstick and smell the fluid if it smells burnt or is dark brown you definetly have traning trouble

cheap fix till you get it sold flush and refill with top nitch fluid and new filter that will cost about $300 and specify thats all YOU need done as per mechanic friend told you ..... even if YOU do not have a mecahnic friend say it that YOU know whats wrong and thats all you need done !

PLUS when they are doing the work U strongly suggest you must watch them working on it so no shenanigans happen!

Been working on cars since i was teen agaer 17 yrs old had wackiest problems wuth every model Ford GM chrysler

NO foreign cars because of reason you just ran into triple cost for even a Gas Pump

Chrysler car was only 18$ back in 70's friend had an audi which used electric pump his cost fucking $80

Never change the transmission fluid. Never. Nothing but problems once you do.

Did you do that to your car before the problem?

My dilemma is over. First off, there is no way I can personally check the trans fluid, has to have the pan dropped to even look. The fluid has never been changed until this problem arose.

Secondly, I did go to two other places to have it looked at, it is shot. I had it serviced this morning with new filter, fluid, etc and he told me it would buy time to shop for another car. They offered to rebuild for around 6k, but I refused.

On the way home, it slipped again and again due to almost stopping and speeding up in traffic(Los Angeles). It was only between 1st and 2nd but I didn't think I would make it home honestly.

I told the wife we had to dump it today because when it was appraised(before I had it diagnosed), it did not show the trans problem on that carfax but the next ones would.

Almost 10 hours later and only 4k down, we now own a 2013 Acura MDX, done with BMW for awhile :)

I'm sad you didn't go with the Porsche Cayenne. That is a sweet ride. I love it!

But the MDX interior is awesome too. The ride is so freakin smooth. (I would be done with BMW forever, if I were you.)
