Luebke faces Dodgers in second game

The Dodgers opened the season Monday with arguably the best left-handed starter in the National League ? 2011 Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw.

Friday night the Padres counter with a pitcher who they believe could develop into one of the top left-handers in the National League ? Cory Luebke.

Comparisons?

Right now, not many.

Kershaw, who retired after only three innings of the season opener with a stomach virus, has reached the top of his game at the age of 24. Luebke is just coming into his own at 27.

?Cory?s a late bloomer,? Padres general manager Josh Byrnes said late last month after signing Luebke to a contract extension that commits the pitcher to the Padres through the end of the 2017 season. The contract is worth between $12 million and $22.75 million depending on how many of the two club options the Padres exercise.

While Kershaw was going 21-5 last season with a 2.28 ERA in 33 starts, Luebke was 6-10 with a 3.29 ERA in his first major league season. After making 29 appearances out of the bullpen to start the season, Luebke finished with 17 straight starts, going 5-8 with a 3.31 ERA.

Luebke worked on his changeup during spring training.

?The change must be part of his mix,? Padres manager Bud Black said of Luebke Thursday afternoon. ?It must become a useful pitch.?

Luebke will be facing the Dodgers Chad Billingsley Friday night in the second game of the season-opening four-game series against the Dodgers at Petco Park (7:05 p.m.).
