It seems less and less teams are getting backdoor covers. Out of the favorites yesterday many had chances, Cleveland, 49'ers, Seattle, Sandiego, jets, but none could backdoor the opponent.

I believe this is due to what the Bears did twice earlier this season. Defensive co-ordinators are becoming more aggressive even blitzing against teams trying to get the backdoor. With the success of the onside kick teams are not playing cover2 as much in the 4th quarter. This makes it a lot easier to take favorites, and easier on the TV.

maybe the defensive coordinators were losing their asses playing favorites early in the season. i know ray rhodes hates when his opponent covers a big spread with a meaningless touchdown.

After watching what Miami did on 4th down, it supports further the theory of backdoor covers disappearing. I can't remember a year where there has been so few backdoor covers. Two instances Sanfran against Buffalo, Marriuci wanted to run up the score, and Miami yesterday, he wanted 35+points and he got 41. Good to know if your taking favorites.

Backdoor covers are overrated in the pros. Most dogs I see that cover are either winning outright or are leading for much of the game and get beat in the 4th quarter. By that time when the favorite gets the lead, the coach decides to milk the clock (and rightfully so) and not play aggressive offensively.

It should not be viewed as an excuse not to use dogs. Like I said, most games are too competitive for back doors to even matter. Last night's game was a blowout, but look around the scores every week. Most are close.
