Know what? I'm a pretty mellow guy. Not much gets me too riled up. I visit this site to gather information, post some picks and enjoy a bit of comraderie with some guys who are trying to reach the same goal I am (the bookie's pocket).
As a rule, I wander up to the General Discussion area to get a few laughs. Usually, if I see a topic that doesn't interest me, I just don't open it. However, in this case, I saw something that really bothered me. Maybe I should have just not opened it. But, seeing a thread titled "barbaro dead" with a smiley face beside it pissed me off.
Just a horse? Yeah, just a horse. An unbeaten colt. A Kentucky Derby champion. At the same time, yeah, just a horse. But you see, everyone should get the opportunity to be around a racehorse for any length of time. To me, a racehorse epitomizes everything that is beautiful about sport: raw, unadulterated athleticism; strength; heart; courage. Each morning, they go about their work, and like all sports, some are better at it than others. But they all do it - no questions asked.
I have been lucky enough to spend some of my life around racehorses and watch these animals at work. I have also been around a racehorse who broke down, and it is one of the most disturbing things I have experienced.
I guess that's what sickens me the most about this thread. Sure Barbaro was just a horse: he didn't have a family to go home to support at night and he didn't have to pay income tax. But for one minute, don't think he didn't make others' lives better. And not because he was a champion millionaire. There are barns full of cheap claimers that make people's lives more enjoyable.
As for Barbaro, not for one minute was this about money. Sure, he was kept alive this long because his owners could afford it. But Barbaro was not going to make any more money. Artificial insemination is not used in the thoroughbred breeding industry, so Barbaro would not be any good at stud, as I am sure he would not be able to support his own weight to breed a mare.
And we bet on athletes of all sorts of athletes doing all sorts of things - from golf to NASCAR to football to horse racing. Why not hear about a champion's courageous fight caused by a horrific accident rather than the wasted talent of a degenerate like Maurice Claurett or a Cincinnati Bengal roster in a police line-up.
I'm off my soap box no, but believe me: I feel lucky that I understand this was not "just a horse".
