Barkley says changes are racially motivated
From ESPN.com
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Former NBA star Charles Barkley is accusing Augusta National Golf Club of "blatant racism," saying the reason behind recent changes to the course was to keep Tiger Woods from winning The Masters.

"Jack Nicklaus won The Masters six damn times, and he was hitting it past everybody else, and they never made a change," Barkley said in this week's issue of Sports Illustrated. "What they're doing to Tiger is blatant racism."

Augusta National spokesman Glenn Greenspan said the club had no comment.

Recent renovations, which include nearly 300 additional yards, were announced by chairman Hootie Johnson the day before last year's Masters began. Woods won his second green jacket by two shots over David Duval.

Woods was asked two weeks ago whether the changes were intended for him.

"I spoke to Hootie about the changes, and the changes are not for me," Woods said. "They're for the kids that are coming up in the future. I'm not that long, anymore. I kind of dink it around. There are a lot of kids out there now in college golf and high school golf that hit the ball farther than I do. They're getting bigger and stronger, and the new technology is helping out.

"I guess they went ahead and took a step to prevent players in the future from shooting low scores."

Woods became the first black to win The Masters in 1997. He won by 12 strokes with a 270, breaking by one shot the 72-hole scoring record held by Nicklaus and Raymond Floyd.

Every hole at Augusta has been altered since the course was opened in 1934. Among the more significant changes was adding a large double bunker in the landing area down the left side of the 18th fairway in 1967, the year after Nicklaus won his second straight Masters.

Tees have been moved back on eight holes through the years, and the pond was added to the left of the par-3 16th green in 1947.

Barkley said he brought up the allegations because, "Tiger doesn't like to speak out."

"We need black athletes to speak out," said Barkley, who poses bare-chested on the cover of Sports Illustrated appearing to break chains and shackles. "Michael (Jordan) could do it and Tiger could do it, but you have to be willing to be ridiculed. I'm willing to be ridiculed."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm very much aware that there is racism in the world but, comments like this from Barkley, made without the correct facts, just seem to inflame tensions and turn people off.
Sometimes the Politically correctness in this country just seems to go too far... IMHO

Personally, I like Sir Charles and consider him one of the best in
his trade when playing.....but for him to make a statement such
as this about a subject he knows nothing about, I find hard to
believe he would even go there....are we sure we have our facts
straight......Either you're wrong or him and Nolan Richardson have
caught the same flu bug...........
my first edit didn't work....so #2
I repeat......him and Nolan have caught the same flu bug.......I
don't look at color....but prejudice runs down both streets......
Augusta is ajusting to equipment changes.......NOT Tiger Woods...
also the talent coming up will blow records away with the new
clubs and BALLS.........;)

At least 5-% of what Barkley says is said purely for the reaction it gets. It is hard to know what he really means. Years ago he said that he hated all white people. His wife was white. Of course, when speaking about a wife, he may not have been exaggerating for once.

shows you how much Barkley knows about golf.......anyone who thinks adding length to Augusta will hurt Woods is a moron.......this now eliminates the Justin Leonards from ever winning a Masters unless they play the 4 rounds of their life hitting 20-25 perfect golf shots a round......makes Woods a bigger favorite.......

have to grow rough to hurt Woods......even then it doesn't hurt him too much because he will just hit his 2 iron and keep it in play in position.......

Augusta is all about positioning....now only long hitters can get their ball in the right spots......

Note to Self: Anytime Charles Barkley has anything to say, pay no Attention to him for he is an incredible idiot! More rational thought spews from beantownjim on an afternoon stroll through the old age home down on 108th!

He is one of the best Ballers of all time and yes from Auburn, but I think his stints at living out of the Great State of Alabama has caused enough mental duress that he is considered an idiot off the court!

Kinda like when he Tossed that Joker through the glass window that time, well a couple of days later guess where he was! Right back in Auburn for a little lesson in Common sense. I ran into him at this BBQ joint across from campus and he was just as nice as he could be. Just spoke and went on about his business. Now as far as our other esteamed announcer from Auburn Terry Bowden, now he's a Dick! I ran into him three or four different times and he never returned a hello or a nod or nothing! Just a real Jackass! Little short no neck pecker head!

Hey you know what chaps Terry Bowdens Ass?

His cowboy boots!:moon:

Blue, just throwing a little smack around:moon: Both of my brothers graduated in the Plains:shrug: Rest of us from the college of national championships. As for Terry Bowden, he would probably rather go by Richard! :thefinger

Dear Charles

I find it amusing an athlete from a sport where killings, rapes, drug convictions ect are monthly occurances even considers bashing a sport where if a guy gets a dwi or divorced its headline news. Just because there happens to be a sport void of tatoo's,ear rings, ego's,punching players, fans and coaches and felons I assume you must think they must be racists. If you would Charhles please leave one of the few sports left ,where integrity is golden and players call penaties on themselves, to those that appreciate those qualities.

Being from the Philly area and a Sixers fan, I really like Sir Charles but I am getting tired of everyone playing the racism card. I've never owned a slave and neither did my parents and grandparents. This had NOTHING to do with race. They are trying to make the field more competitive but that is not the answer anway. FUK RACISM and those who use it as an excuse.

This isn't necessarilly directed to you or anyone else for that
matter....you brought up the CLASS of the game of golf.............
I still can't get out of my mind Payne Stewart and company
flying helplessly to death several years back and the ensuing
loss in the golf family.........happy to see the term CLASS ACT
every once in a while.........:)

I agree Lightning. I just saw his talk on the NBA show. They

should have asked him a couple more questions:

Q. Can a black american win a scholarship in America?

A. Yes.

Q. Can a white american, or any other origin, win a scholarship from the National Negro Foundation?

A. NO

Q. Can a black american win the Miss USA contest?

A. Yes.

Q. Can a white american, or any other origin, win a Miss Black USA pagent?

A. NO :nono:

Wednesday, on the Dan Patrick Radio Show,

Wednesday, on the Dan Patrick Radio Show,

DP called out Sir Charles on his remarks and sure enough, Barkley called the show. CB asked DP not to interupt him so he could make his point but when DP tried to rebut his comments....CB would open his mouth and cut him short. CB tried to say how Nicklaus had won 6 Masters and no changes were made...DP called his bluff and told him how they made several changes for Jack including moving and adding bunkers. After being proven wrong, CB then turned the call into why the NBA has no...and I quote..."No black owners...few black GM's and few black fans in the stands". DP told him to buy a team. CB said if one were for sale he would. DP says...."How bout the Hornets?"

IMO - Barkley made fools of the African/American race with his comments.

no......Barkley made a fool of himself with his arguments.....similar arguments can be made against almost anyone who cries "racist" when there is no actual racism.......

many african americans are indiviualists and prefer not to live their lives with a persecution complex........
