There is of course another B Open this week, and the field is particularly weak
One player initially catches my eye is Brett Quigley as low as 20-1 at Surrey the 66-1 at Betinternet is surprisingly large

Preview & outright plays:

Who would want to be tournament director for the B.C. Open? In previous years it has fallen on the same week or the week before the Ryder Cup and since last year it has had a new home on the Tour schedule: the same week as the British Open! To make matters worse for this fated event, Hurricane Floyd created havoc with the first two rounds in 1999 and that was the last time the likes of Phil Mickelson and Tom Lehman would enter. In light of the mass withdrawals on Monday, the field has been reduced from 156 to 144.

But while the (fat) cats are away ... maybe there's the chance for one of the upcoming stars to gain that all-important Tour exemption that comes with victory. At least there is plenty of course form, though En-Joie did undergo a substantial overhaul after the 1996 event. At the start of the 1990s, Fred Couples and John Daly won this event, now it is the straights hitters and good putters that lead the way here. Narrowed fairways and small, raised greens confront the players this week. One player of note who is not here this week is the 1999 and 2000 champion, Brad Faxon. He did not have to suffer the ignominy of having to pre-qualify for the British Open this year, so he is elsewhere.

The three selections this week are definitely of the straight-hitting variety: Fred Funk, Jonathan Kaye and Jay Haas. Funk has not played since missing the cut at the rain-wrecked Buick Classic. That event can be ignored and he was in excellent form beforehand: top-20 finishes in his three events prior to the US Open and 44th in that event. He has a great record in this event. He lost to Faxon in a playoff for the title in 1999, his last visit, and won the event in 1996. His game is well-suited to this course and he should go close.

Kaye can also boast good form in this event and in recent weeks. He has finished in the top-20 in the last two years (4th in 1999) and closed with 65-67 over the weekend to jump to 18th at the Greater Milwaukee Open. A player with a decent all-round game, he looks a quality player in this field and this could be the week he makes that step up the Tour ladder and secures his maiden win. He has had three runners-up spots so far.

Finally, Jay Haas' form has been inspired of late, especially for someone only two years away from the Senior PGA Tour. He has finished in the top-20 in four of his last six Tour events and has not too far from the leaderboard in the other two. His resilience last week after claiming the 1st round lead cost me dear! He hasn't played this event since 1996, but he had two top-5 finishes in those last four visits and this could be a week to turn the clocks back for this veteran. Maybe even as far back as eight years to his last victory!

Outright plays:

Fred Funk to win 16/1 e.w. @ BetInternet or NetBetSports
Jonathan Kaye to win 25/1 e.w. @ Surrey
Jay Haas to win 25/1 e.w. @ Victor Chandler

Briny Baird has been very consistent of late, he won on the Buy.com tour last year and he finished 5th in Hawaii earlier this year 66-1 Sports.com

72-hole plays:

Len Mattiace to beat Pete Jordan -111 @ Simon Bold
Three missed cuts and two finishes outside the top-50 are signs of poor form for Jordan. Mattiace has not been great, but at least he has been making more cuts and finishing in the top-25 more often. Both have decent records here, but playing in his 7th straight week and out of form, Jordan should struggle to capitalize on the weak field

Jonathan Kaye to beat Brett Quigley -111 @ Simon Bold
Three rounds of 67 signaled a return to the form that brought him victory on the Buy.com Tour and a top-5 finish in the MasterCard Colonial two months ago. He had struggled since and while he has had two top-10 finishes on this course in the past three years, it is not set up for his inaccurate driver. Kaye looks the more consistent player

Esteban Toledo to beat Craig Spence -111 @ Simon Bold [3 units]
Opposing Spence again! He did feature before the weekend at the GMO, but has failed to make any sort of impression on either the Buy.com or main Tour this season. In 16 starts, he has missed the cut 13 times and that is on all Tours. He may be bolstered by his strong start and figure this week - he did finish 4th here two years ago - but I don't see it. Toledo's form is a cause for concern, but he is a straight hitter and was runner-up last year.

Adding 72-hole plays:

Fred Funk to beat Stephen Ames -135 @ Camelot
Will take top selection against a player who has played just once in seven weeks. Had been in good form and secured a 4th place in 1999, but too much points to a very high finish from Funk

Jonathan Kaye to beat Brad Elder -140 @ Camelot
Another outright selection and this time against a player without decent current or course form. Last week's 28th position was his first time in seven events that he had been inside the top-50. Not good enough against Kaye

Esteban Toledo to beat Tom Scherrer -140 @ Camelot
Last year's runner-up should beat the woefully out of form Scherrer, who best finish this year has been 25th and has missed 10 of 15 cuts including the last four

Update:

Four of the six plays are decided at the cut and they are split. Mattiace lost to Jordan by three, Toledo beat Spence by five and Scherrer by four, while Funk lost to Ames by six. In the two remaining plays, 2nd place Kaye trails the leader Quigley by three and leads Elder by five. With Kaye in 2nd place, there is reason to be hopeful with the ourights, but also with Haas who lies in 20th place and Toledo who is 28th.

Nice call on Quigley, Ian. I hope he gets a place finish for you

Final update: 4-2-0 and +3.54 units

Both the remaining plays won as Kaye maintained a strong challenge on Sunday. He beat Quigley by four and Elder by seven. Meant a decent profit on the week from the less-than-stellar event.

Update on outright plays: 2-1 and +4.25 units

Funk may have missed the cut, both a good performance from the other two picks. Kaye took the lead early in the final round, but finished 3rd for a place win. Haas finished one shot back in 4th for the other small win.

PGA Tour ytd
Matchups/props: 320-267; +25.14 units
Outright plays: 16-69; +21.25 units

All Tours ytd
Matchups/props: 514-443; +33.32 units
Outright plays: 63-276; +142.81 units
