BCS National Championship Betting

By Mike Harrison

Okay, enough with the talk about the Utah Utes and the #1 ranking, and for that matter the Longhorns can quiet down as well (you had to come from behind on the final drive of the game to beat Ohio State?enough said): tonight the National Championship get settled on the field within the system that is in place. Right or wrong, that?s the system.
And the truth of the matter is the best team in the country right now is sitting down in LA, fresh off mauling Penn State in the Rose Bowl.

Tonight?s Championship battle has the #2 Florida Gators as the favorite over the #1 ranked Oklahoma Sooners. Bettors fell in love with the gators in this matchup early and the love affair hasn?t abated as the money keeps pouring in on the lower ranked of the two teams.

Florida opened as a 3-point favorite but have been bet up to 4.5 (and there are even 5s out there, although 5 is a ?dead? number). Building up to the big game Gator money keeps flowing in.

As of Thursday morning, the managers at SPORTSBETTING.com are reporting virtually 80% of the volume coming in the door is Florida action. Although they did say they?re noticing some Sooner money starting to appear with the spread at 4.5 and game time approaching.

The Total is sitting at 70.5, with bettors still liking a shootout, despite the big number, as 70% of the Over/Under betting action is tipped to the ?Over? side.

As the top-ranked BCS team, the Oklahoma Sooners finished 2008 with an impressive 10-2 mark against the spread (12-1 straight up).

But there is no edge here, as the Gators were just as profitable, hitting for a 10-2 ATS mark (and 12-1 straight up).

Bettors who?ve played Florida in its last six January bowl games are even, as the Gators have gone 3-3 SU and ATS dating back to 2002, however people who?ve taken the Over in the same six games are perfect as the Over is 6-0 in that span.

Oklahoma is in the midst of a January slump, dropping its last four January bowl games (0-4) SU and ATS.

While favored in the title game, the Gators haven?t all that profitable when favored by 6-points or less going 10-10 SU and 7-11-2 ATS in the last 20 games in that situation.

The Sooners are a profitable 13-7 ATS as ?dogs of 6 or less in their last 20 in that spot.
The championship game will be played at Miami Dolphin Stadium which has a grass surface and the Gators thrive on the natural turf, going 8-0 in their last eight games on grass straight up and boasting a 7-0 ATS mark; Florida has cashed six consecutive Overs on grass surfaces as well.

Oklahoma has been a profitable play on grass as well, taking eight of its last nine games (8-1) SU and seven of its last nine (7-2) ATS with the Over going 7-0 in the last seven games on natural turf.

As you can see, both like to play ?Over? on the real stuff.

Dating back to 1999, the Sooners haven?t covered against an SEC opponent going 0-5 ATS.

There are prop bets galore for the big game.

Florida QB Tim Tebow and Oklahoma pivot Sam Bradford have taken the past two Heisman Trophies and not surprisingly are prominently featured.

As you?d expect, both are options for the BCS championship MVP prop with Bradford listed at +250 and Tebow at +200.

There are also head-to-head prop wagers for passing yards, completions and more. You can find a great list of prop wagering options at SPORTSBETTING.com.

Heisman Winners

Think backing the Heisman winner in the BCS Championship game is a good idea? Think again. Since 1974 the team with the Heisman Trophy winner has a dismal record in their bowl games, posting a 8-24-1 ATS mark.

This year?s winner, Sam Bradford, will lead the underdog Sooners.

Good luck on the big game.
