I am thinking of moving to Arizona with my family (my wife's idea). She was out there last week for a funeral and now wants to move there. We have been looking to move out west for a while now and pretty close on making a final decision. Ifyou could shoot me an e-mail sometime (I could give mine to Jack for you to have) letting me know anything on education, (elementary and high school), jobs, taxes, or anything else you have to say either positive or negative, I would appreciate the comments.

Thanks,
Scott

Hey Scott,

I absolutely love Arizona! Any idea where you are looking to move to? Phoenix? Tucson? I might be able to help you out a little more if I have an idea of the general area that you are looking to move to.

Only drawback that I know of regarding Arizona is that it can be EXTREMELY hot here! It takes a few years to get used to. . .

Also not sure if you are interested in job opportunities, but Arizona is one of the fastest growing states in the country as are many states in the southwest.

If you can give me a specific city as to where you are looking to move, I would be happy to go into more detail about that area as far as I know.

Also any questions that you may have. . . I hope I have been of some help!

I personally wouldn't want to live in Mesa.

I moved to Arizona in 1993. The summers are something that take MORE than a little getting used to. I love the weather the rest of the year but the summers are a LIVING HELL. They last from June until mid-September.

Tempe is not a bad place to live. I live in Surprise which is one of the fastest growing cities in Arizona.

I too would be willing to give you my two cents worth if you are interested.

Prescott is a nice place to live but it depends on whether you are planning to work there or are moving there to enjoy the scenery and don't really need to work. Many people move to Prescott and open small business and then don't make it. Not really sure why.

K-12 schooling is awful in AZ especially in Mesa. ..If you move to Tempe make sure it is the South side of the city or else you are going to get too many college students around. Look towards Chandler if possible brnad new complexes being built in a decent school ditrict with VERY AFFORDABLE prices on homes

I'm in Scottsdale on weekends and will be there full-time in the beginning of January. I grew up in LA and my prior golfing career took me all over the country, but Arizona is one of my favorite places. The summer is no joke. Not as bad as Miami, but it is tough. I highly suggest visiting for a week in August, especially if you're not used to serious desert heat. The weather the rest of the year is amazing, but late May to late Sept is no joke.

The East Valley is really growing - I have several friends that have gone out to Mesa. Very affordable housing. Tempe is ok, but as said, it's mostly college kids. Most people are moving out of the city area. Mesa, Scottsdale, even AJ are all booming. Prescott is really a ways out there. Surprise and Chandler are growing too. I like the Chandler area, it's just south of Tempe and a good location.

One of the nicest areas if you ask me is Fountain Hills. It's out towards Scottsdale but a little more northeast. It's just about to start growing. I'm a golfer and my life revolves around golf and Fountain Hills is a dream place for a golfer. They are building a new country club, Fire Rock and have one of the best public courses in the entire state, SunRidge - which has hosted numberous state tourneys. Fountain Hills is just right now starting to get popular, but housing is still far below Scottsdale. It's not that bad of a drive into Phoenix - maybe 45 minutes in the worst traffic. It's at a higher elevation too, which means it's a few degrees cooler - which can make all the difference in the world.

Prescott is tough unless you're going to work in or near Prescott.

Of the ones you've mentioned, Mesa isn't a bad choice. The cost of living is fairly low, you're close to Phoenix and there are a million new homes. The only downside is the schooling system and you need to pick the right neighborhood.

If you're looking at the East Valley, Superstition Mountain area isn't that much further out and is pretty nice. And if you're considering Tempe, you have to be on the south side.

One last suggestion, the commute downtown is brutal, but North Phoenix isn't that bad. There are a lot of great housing deals because so many people are moving to the suburbs and East Valley.

Taxes in all of Arizona are some of the lowest in the nation. State and local income tax are some of the lowest in the country as are property taxes. Car insurance is pretty low too.

The schools are definitely better in the Scottsdale area, but they're not terrible in the rest of the valley. And the job market hasn't been hit anywhere near what other places have in the country. It has definitely slowed in the past several months but it is still growing.

Thanks for all the reply's guys...Some great information there and I appreciate it all.

The heat of summer won't bother me as I go to Vegas 4-5 times a year and 2 or 3 of those times are in July and August for the Cheap golf specials. I love the heat and that is one of the reasons I'm moving from the Northeast. I hate winters, and I think 32 of them are enough...

I have family in the Ahwatukee section of Phoenix. They are moving back to upstate New York within the year though.

The crime rate is of concern to me as we (my family) come from a decent size city (125,000), but the crime rate is somewhat low. We have murders, rapes, robberies, etc, but not that many. We can let our kids play in the neighborhood without worrying about someone kidnapping them or drive by's.

I am looking for a "neighborhood" setting with decent schooling as my kids are in 2nd and 6th grades and have quite a bit of school left.

I have noticed taxes are extremely low and that is a nice plus for us as we have some relatively high property taxes here, but no state tax.

I am looking to find work in either Restaurant/Hotel Management (which I have 5+ years experience), or Wastewater Treatment which has been my current job for the past 8 years. I have an Associate's Degree in Business Administration (just completed this week), and I feel that will open a few more doors for me than not having anything like when I was looking for work in Vegas 2 years ago. I have never had to commute for a job in my life (my current one is less tha 2 miles from my house), so that may take some geting used to if I have to.

My wife is an Accountant and looking to start her own business, but she will work for a firm to get us out there. She also wants to be out there by the time tax season starts so we are looking to get out there as soon as we sell our house.

Any more info would be appreciated , as I am taking it all in and really aprreciate all the help you guys are giving. If any of you want my e-mail address to forward some more info feel free to get it from Jack. I will let him know it is OK.

Thanks again guys, and I hope to see some of you before the turn of the new year. I can change my name to Dr Feelgood AZ...the picks will still suck though...
