Best Things to do in Boston

Going to Boston next weekend (the 19th-21st) to see my Cubbies take on the Red Sox at Fenway. Right now we've got tickets to Friday's game and may or may not pick up tix to Saturday's game too depending on how much the price comes down.

Regardless, we'll definitely have all day Friday and Saturday (and possibly Saturday night) with no agenda, so just thought I'd check with my fellow MJ'ers and see if any of you Bostonians or those who have visited could recommend some places or things to do.

Although I am a fan of history, I'm not really looking for museums and such for this particular trip. It's a trip out of town away from the wife and baby girl with my brother and a good friend so I'm more looking for good food, good drinks, and just fun stuff to do.

I should add that we're staying at the Hyatt Regency downtown and won't have a car, so wherever we go has to be within walk/cab/T distance.

Any recommendations would be appreciated!

Please take pictures.

Jerry Remy's Sports Bar and Grill near Fenway. Good food. Was there during the off season so it wasn't packed. I enjoyed it, plus the food was free so I couldn't complain either way.......

Since you're staying within walking distance to Faneuil Hall, I'd reccomend that. In it is Quincy Market which has a ton of small shops, restaurants, etc. The whole area is known as FH, but you won't be far from bars, restaurants, etc. That area at night gets pretty busy, especially the bars on that strip (Purple Shamrock, Bell in Hand, Hennessey's) If you're looking for the 21-26 year old crowd who want to drink, be obnoxious, and clown around, that's your area at night. Not far from there is the North End, which is all Italian restaurants, can recommend a few, but depending on the weather, you'll wait quite a bit, as most of the restaurants are pretty small in size.

Fenway Park tour is actually kind of neat, the new ownership group watered it down a bit, but they added a few things. I don't know if you've been here before, but if not, it's worth the hour and half or so, and I think it's under $20. Before the game, depends what you're looking for. Jerry Remy's is solid, and it's good because it's (hard to explain) on the side of the park where less people come from. Food is good, huge tvs, always a decent crowd. If you're just looking to slosh beer, and want to roll with a slightly seedier crew, then try the Baseball Tavern, which is across the street. They have a "roofdeck," although you'll laugh when you make it up there. Closer to the park, you'll generally have to wait in line, and to me that's just ridiculous. The Cask N' Flagon is right on the corner across from the Park, and is usually a meat market. Game On! is actually in Fenway, and if you get there early enough, and are in the basement, they open the curtain, and you can see indoor BP. I think Game On has the best food in the area, but you'll deal with a lot of crowds, and overpriced beers. Boston Beer Works is good, and across the street.

If you're looking for Saturday's tickets, I'd buy sooner than later. Interest has dwindled due to poor performance, and I saw tickets for the Cubs Saturday game for 60$. Beginning of the year, they were fetching double. The Celtics and Bruins have also really hurt sales. Monday night, they had tickets available for $6, which I never have seen before. With the Celtics gone, the Bruins bandwagon had to go to Meineke today to get new shocks. They're playing Saturday at 1:30 (if necessary), so it won't interfere (which really would have worked in your favor) but it's all about hockey now.

Lemme know if you want any more information.

Enjoy the trip!

Also, remember, Boston is a city of girls who are 7s and think they're 10s.

Good info Hogman! Go up there often for Yanks-Sox games. You listed some places I've never been to but will try out now.
You know of any microbreweries? They don't have to be in Boston proper. Thx

Biggest one in the world: Sam Adams. haha. It's in Jamaica Plain, which isn't far from Boston proper. They do a nice tour, I actually think it's free (suggested donation) but they fill you up with beers, and it's nice because, although they have hit the big time, they still do a lot of things a microbrewery does.

Boston Beerworks does their own beers. Not sure if you're looking for a brewery/tour type thing, or just some good locals. Watch City Brewery in Waltham does a nice job brewing their own.

In terms of tours, Harpoon is up here as well, by the Seaport, and they do a nice tour as well. Check their site for the Harpoon fest which is a pretty wild time.

that is very true

busy places to swing by (by T)

fanueil_hall (as stated above) best selection for shop/restaurants (next to haymarket, which has fruit, produce vendors) -though is better experienced at midday/night. -is right accross the street from NE Aquarium which if you walk to the edge of water (where is located) can see the seal enclosure through glass for free (see aquarium below). from there i would walk to through the north end (pplenty opf pizzerias and italian restaurants - though definitely need to stop at mikes_pastry --on your way to the charlestown navy yard where you can see the
uss_constitution docked for free (or take tour).
you could either stop at the museum of science and jump on a boston_duck_tour in one of their amphibous tour trollies -OR- jump on the greenline next to TD banknorth garden at north_station and shoot over to PARK ST which opens up to and walk through boston_common and public_gardens where you're "girls" would prolly like the swan_boats
not soo many eatery/bars here, until you walk to newbury_st which your girls will definitely LOVE. Tons of food optoions/outdoor eating options and everykinda shop. Or you could simply walk to parallel side BOYLSTON st for equal amounts of food/shop restaurants, though cheaper (as arent located ON newbury st) eventually finding you on COMM ave where if you walk in middle of streets is a relaxed, scenic -of sorts walkway that if followed for a spell, will find you at Kenmore square, which is on the edge of Fenway.

Theres also Harvard sq on the redline nad to a lesser extent Davis sq (also redline)

Aquarium: The front of the aquarium has a harbor seal exhibit; aquarium entrance is not required to view these lively creatures. An exhibit in the back houses harbor seals. Visitors can watch trainers interact with both these species at various points during the day.

Tons of great info in here; thanks guys!

I did end up pulling the trigger today on 3 tix for Saturday's game at $77 each. There were cheaper ones in the bleachers but I wanted seats in the grandstand since we'll be in the bleachers on Friday night. Still, paid face for those ($33) so to get two games for $110 . . . I can live with that. Especially considering that bleacher tickets at Wrigley go for $80 each face for the premium games (which is insane, but that's a rant for another thread).

My brother is one of those whose always got his camera with him, which is something I constantly make fun of him for but am always glad later when we have the pictures. So I'll be sure to post pics once we get backl

As for the attitude of the women, doesn't bother me. I'm married and the other two guys are in serious relationships so eye candy is all we're looking for anyway.
