The 39th annual Haskell Invitational kicks off on Sunday August 6. This renowned Grade 1 race carries a hefty $1 million purse. Monmouth Park, located in New Jersey, will be hosting the race. A field of 7-9 three year olds is set to run the mile and eighth race. A total of 14 races are featured at Monmouth Park?s summer centerpiece event.
This years expected line-up consists of some big name contenders. Topping this list is Bluegrass Cat; who has earned two solid 2nd place finishes at this year?s Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes. Other likely contenders include Deputy Glitters (Kentucky Derby 8th, Belmont Stakes 11th), Flashy Bull (Kentucky Derby 14th), Awfully Smart, Electrify, Strong Contender, and Praying For Cash (the hometown hero).
There?s been talk of other possible contenders such as Point Determined (Kentucky Derby 9th, by Bob Baffert - 3 time Haskell winner) and Seaside Retreat (Kentucky Derby 10th).
