What a week in both College and NFL football. Some spectacular games to watch including a great last second win by Texas in the Rose Bowl. The action in the Rose bowl was absolutely huge with both teams attracting plenty of support. NFL wildcard weekend continued along the same way as during the year with Washington, Carolina and New England all involved in our customers teaser bets. Overall the NFL was break even weekend for us, but the College Bowls were definitely great for us, mainly because of the huge action we received. NBA and College basketball will now start to see more action with NFL into the divisional playoffs, and college football finished for the year. Here is the break down of some of our football games this week...

Monday -

We had one of our busiest Mondays ever with NBA, NHL and college basketball along with 6 bowl games spread out during the day. It was a college football betting and viewing feast. We had alot of nervous moments with our exposure on some key numbers like Texas Tech -3, and Georgia -7. Luckily no games landed on the number and we had a good day. Only one favorite covered the spread on Monday out of the 6 games. Virginia Tech covered the -9.5 or 10 points we offered so with results like that as a bookmaker you have to expect to have a good day.

Tuesday -

Penn State was a 9 point favorite to beat Florida State in the Orange Bowl in Miami Florida and it took overtime for them to win by 3. Because Penn State couldn?t cover the 9 points, it was a great result for us. One customer of ours did win $65000 on Florida State +9 points.

Wednesday -

The Rose bowl was just absolutely spectacular. From the action on both teams, to the final result we couldn?t have asked for more. USC opened for betting being a 6 point favorite and that line quickly moved to a converted touchdown (-7). The line mainly stayed at -7 all the time, but with many Texas bettors buying a 1/2 point to +7.5, and many USC bettors buying down to -6.5 points. I can?t tell you want we would have paid out to nearly all our customers if USC had won by 7! It really would have been a disaster. The game total was great for us aswell as we opened the total at 75 but closed it lower at 69.5 points after alot of action from our sharp customers.

Saturday -

Saturday was the start of NFL Wildcard weekend. As I wrote earlier, all our teaser bettors hooked up Washington, New England and Carolina and who would have thought that a team who passes for 41 yards and rushes for 95 yards would win a game 17-10! That is exactly what Washington did to Tampa Bay. They simply had no real offense, but it was a battle of the defenses and Washington held up under tremendous late pressure from Tampa Bay.

New England was always going to be a tough opponent for Jacksonville and with the selection of Byron Leftwich at starting quarter back being a big talking point considering he hasn?t played for 5 games. New England closed a 7.5 point favorite and it was a close game until the third quarter and then it was all New England. Luckily for us the game total stayed below the opening 37.5 to the closing 39 points.

Sunday -

Many people expected a NY Giants win here, except out teaser bettors who were all over the value on Carolina. Eli Manning and the Giants just could never get going and Carolina shut them out 23-0. I wish we could say it was great with the underdog winning, but Carolina had alot of betting support and many of our customers including on customer who risked a total of $100,000 at various prices of +125 and +120 to win a mammoth $122500!

The conclusion to Wildcard weekend saw another underdog win on Sunday with Pittsburgh prevailing over Cincinnati 31-17. Unfortunately for Cincinnati supporters they received a big blow with Carson Palmer going down after one throw with a knee injury. We did have a few big teaser bets with Cincinnati, but unfortunately for us all the damage in teasers was done already. Overall our customers had the better of us on Sunday, but our week was pretty good, especially considering how bad the 2 weeks before were for us.

This week is full steam ahead in the NFL with the Divisional playoff games. Washington at Seattle, New England at Denver, Pittsburgh at Indianapolis and Carolina at cold, cold Chicago. College football is concluded now and all eyes will be on the NBA and College Basketball until the divisional playoffs begin on the weekend.

Until next week,

Shane Catford
