Fans of American Idol have been known to place friendly side bets on who will emerge the winner of the popular reality series.

Now they can up the ante a little bit, as www.betED.com is offering odds on who will win Season Six of American Idol.

Bettors have a simple choice: Will the winner of American Idol be male (+100) or female (-150)?

The series has gained in popularity since the summer of 2002, when the U.S. version was created from the British hit called Pop Idol.

The grueling competition has crowned Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia, Carrie Underwood and Taylor Hicks successively, and has grown bigger and bigger each season.

Last year, over a billion votes were received throughout the contest, and millions of viewers tuned in to see whether Taylor or Katharine would win, making American Idol the #1 show in America. This year, over a hundred thousand hopeful singers auditioned in seven cities.

Many Idol performers have found greater fame and fortune. Jennifer Hudson, for example, has a role in the current hit movie Dreamgirls. The debut performance just might earn her an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

The experience is definitely a surreal one for someone who never even knew she had a penchant for acting. She humbly addresses her newfound acting abilities, saying, "I'm like, huh? They want me to do what? Act? OK! But I've never thought about it, so this is a surprise to me, but I'm loving it."

She also admits she'd like to continue with both her musical and acting career. If given her way, she'd love to perform in a big-screen adaptation of "A Star is Born" as well as have some sort of role in the Jackie Robinson biopic. She's reading scripts right now, so it looks as though her next role could be in the very near future.
