betED.com offers NHL Stanley Cup odds
Sept. 13, 2007
As National Hockey League players hit the ice for the opening of training camps this week, betED.com is looking toward the future ? next spring, to be exact.
betED.com is offering betting odds on the 2007-2008 Stanley Cup winner, with the defending champion Anaheim Ducks the favorite at +500, followed by the team the Ducks beat in the Stanley Cup Finals, the Ottawa Senators, at +675.
Other favorites include the Detroit Red Wings at +725, the San Jose Sharks at +750 and the New York Rangers at +900.
The longest shot to win the NHL championship is the Wayne Gretzky-coached Phoenix Coyotes at +10500.
In the Western Conference, the Ducks will have 16 of the 20 players who were in the lineup for the Cup-clinching fifth game of the Stanley Cup Finals returning this season.
But two players who won?t be back ? at least the way things stand headed into training camp ? are team captain and Stanley Cup MVP Scott Niedermayer, and top scorer Teemu Selanne. Both have said they are considering retirement, but neither had made an official decision.
With the prospect of losing two top players, the Ducks signed free agent defenseman Mathieu Schneider and forward Todd Bertuzzi during the offseason.
Another player who won?t be returning is promising young power forward Dustin Penner, a restricted free agent who was signed by the Edmonton Oilers over the summer.
That departure could open the door for Bobby Ryan, the second overall selection in 2005. The New Jersey native has progressed steadily since being drafted and there is speculation that he may be ready to make the jump to the NHL.
In the East, the core of the Senators remains intact, although there is room for a few prospects to earn positions.
The big off-season changes came in the front office. John Muckler stepped aside as GM to make way for former head coach Bryan Murray, who had been waiting in the wings to take over the position. Murray decided to promote his former assistant coach John Paddock to maintain continuity behind the bench. Paddock is familiar with many of the players, having worked with them for the past three years.
