The 2008 NASCAR season is revving up and betED.com is offering early odds on which driver will win the season championship title.

Formally the Nextel Cup, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship season officially kicks off Feb. 17 with the 50th Daytona 500.

Defending 2007 champ Jimmie Johnson is a +325-moneyline favorite to win the 2008 title, followed by 2007 runner-up Jeff Gordon at +400.

Dale Earnhardt (+750), Matt Kenseth (+900) and Kyle Busch (+1000) round out the top five at betED.com.

Preseason testing began Jan. 7 at Daytona International Speedway, and NASCAR Preseason Thunder on Feb. 9 at Daytona officially begins the lead-up to the 50th running of the Daytona 500 the following weekend.

Last year?s Daytona 500 winner, Kevin Harvick, is +3000 to take the Sprint Cup championship.

With the 2007 victory, Harvick gave team owner Richard Childress his first Daytona 500 victory since Dale Earnhardt in 1998.

Harvick will attempt to become the first back-to-back winner of the Daytona 500 since Sterling Marlin in 1994-95. Since Marlin, the Daytona 500 winner has finished in the top 10 of the following year?s race just three times (Earnhardt, second in 1999; Michael Waltrip, fifth in 2002; and Dale Earnhardt Jr., third in 2005).

Harvick, who won the Brickyard 400 in 2003, edged Mark Martin at the start/finish to take the victory in the 2007 Daytona 500 by .020 seconds, the closest Daytona 500 finish since computer were first used for scoring in 1993.

Johnson has won the past two Nextel Cups Series, and a win this year will match Carl Yarborough?s run of three consecutive championships.

Since Yarborough achieved consecutive championships in 1976-78, Johnson is the fourth driver to have a chance for a three-peat. Darrell Waltrip (1983), Dale Earnhardt (1988, 1992 and 1995) and Jeff Gordon (1999) were the others.
