The Rays will have righthander James Shields on the mound. Shields is 5-5 with a 3.52 ERA this season. The Mets will counter with lefty Johan Santana, who is 8-4 with a 3.29 ERA.
The game is the second of a 10-game homestand for the Mets, who had lost three straight and six of their last eight games, and just completed a six-game road trip with a 2-4 record, going into action Friday night.
After beating Baltimore on Tuesday, the Mets lost the final two installments of the set, including a 5-4 loss on Thursday.
Tampa Bay had dropped two in a row since a six-game winning streak going into game 1 of the three-game set Friday. The Rays won the first meeting with Colorado on Tuesday before losing the last two matchups, including yesterday's 4-3 setback in the series finale.
Tampa Bay and New York are meeting for the first time since the Rays won two of three meetings at home from June 8-10, 2001. The Rays have won three of the past four matchups between the clubs.
