Way back when, remember that Roger Clemens guy you thought you knew? You know the one who visited hospitals, signed autographs, kissed babies, gave to charity, had the hot wife and was the most dominant pitcher of his generation?
Funny story. He?s ? ummm? not that guy.
For the once perfectly crafted reputation that was already in shreds, you?d have thought for baseball?s former poster boy it couldn?t get any worse... but that was before the story broke that he?d had a 10-year affair with a country music singer and it started when she was only a 15-year-old.
He?s denied it. She said she ?cannot refute anything in the story.?
So ? out of these two, who are you gonna believe?
It?s a toss up I would say.
In the past several months, we have seen the icon that was ?Rocket? Roger Clemens crash down to earth. He sucked at his latest comeback; he was prominently featured in the Mitchell Report where he was accused of being a serial steroid user and he presented himself as an arrogant jerk in front of Congress (where we also learned that he?d arranged to have his wife shot up with Human Growth Hormone so that she could look good in Sports Illustrated). A caring husband clearly. Topping all that off, he is now being investigated for having ?committed perjury and made knowingly false statements? before congress, and could soon be facing indictment.
Then there?s Mindy McCready. The singer, who had a #1 country hit in the 90?s aptly called, "Guys Do It All the Time,? has gone through extensive personal problems in the last few years - to put it mildly. Her life sounds like a country song. She had an OxyContin addiction, she?s been arrested for beating her own mother, she stole a truck and kidnapped the driver and held him as a hostage, then spent a year in jail and has tried to kill herself on several occasions.
Apparently dating Roger was no picnic.
According to the New York Daily News, Clemens was with his Red Sox teammates in a Florida bar called The Hired Hand where the just post-pubescent McCready was signing Karaoke. Clemens, who was 28 at the time and married with two kids, threw her a shirt with his, and several other Red Sox player?s signatures onstage, and, according to a Post source, "It was love at first sight, no doubt about it.?
Ah, young love. From that first meeting, they carried on a relationship that, according to a follow-up story by the AP, wasn?t consummated until after she was of age? barely.
This is all coming out now because of the Clemens' suit against his former trainer Brian McNamee and according to her lawyer, ?None of this would have been revealed but for his lawsuit and sanctimonious testimony before Congress.?
Typical for Roger of late, it?s a self-inflicted mess. In an attempt to sully Clemens any way he can, McNamee is flinging any dirt that he has, and clearly he has a lot, against his former All-American boss.
Roger is left trying to defend himself any way he can, with his lawyers maintaining that McCready was a longtime friend of Clemens and his family, but insisting that the relationship was not sexual.
Just friends ? whom he FedExed bundles of cash, $25,000 at a time - to support her financially.
What a pal!
With the World in such a mess and so much stuff coming out these days about Clemens, ya gotta wonder ? what headline is gonna be next?
?Report: Mortgage Crisis Clemens? Fault?
?California Wildfires set by Rocket Roger?
?Baseball ace took pilots training prior to 9/11?
Arrogance is part of the package for a professional athlete, because they believe they are better than the rest of us - and they are right, athletically speaking.
At games, they are great.
It?s just at real life that so many of them turn out to be so terribly bad.
