The Big Ten conference Spartans are coming off their first winning season since going 8-5 back in 2003. They went bowling last season, but lost 24-21 to the Boston College Eagles in the Champs Sports Bowl.
The Pac-10 conference Golden Bears posted their sixth-straight winning season last year, finishing with a 7-6 ledger. Coach Jeff Tedford's team won its third-consecutive bowl, beating Air Force 42-36 in the Armed Forces Bowl. California is 69-39-4 in season-opening matchups, including 4-2 in the past six seasons.
