Looking ahead to the 2012 regular season schedule before the year got underway, a matchup between the Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Nationals in late July was expected to have consequences on the battle for first place in the National League East. However, many online sports betting baseball experts predicted it would be the Phillies competing for a division title rather than Washington, which gets set to host a three-game series in the nation?s capital beginning Tuesday. The Nationals have maintained their pace in the NL East coming out of the All-Star break, and will look to continue their success against a Philadelphia team they have won four of six games against this season.

The biggest reason for Washington?s success this season has been pitching, which leads the majors with the best ERA, WHIP, BAA, and most quality starts. The Nationals? starting rotation ranks among the best in baseball, but one lingering concern is the pitch count for 24-year old Stephen Strasburg, which the team promised it would monitor at the beginning of the year. Strasburg was expected to be shutdown after he hit a target amount of innings, but with Washington exceeding expectations his performance will now dictate how the team proceeds with him. The young phenom is now 10-4 with a 2.85 ERA, and his 140 strikeouts are most in the NL. Philadelphia will counter with veteran Cliff Lee, who at 1-6 hasn?t come close to reaching expectations. With a 3.95 ERA, many will argue Lee deserves a record, but don?t expect it to improve opposite Strasburg.
