Betting on the Ryder Cup
It?s not a Major, but many golf fans look circle the Ryder Cup as must-see TV ahead of any of the Majors. The Ryder Cup brings an element of drama and tension to golf that doesn?t exist in other tournaments, as the team play, the strategy in matching players and the ?USA vs. Europe? format create an incredibly exciting sports event. And this year?s tourney won?t have the world?s #1 golfer teeing it up, with the absence of Tiger Woods making things even more intriguing.
The big question on the US side is experience. Building up to it, newspaper headlines declared, ?U.S. Ryder Cup team lacking experience? with six of the golfers (Ben Curtis, J.B. Holmes, Anthony Kim, Hunter Mahan, Steve Stricker and Boo Weekley) making their first appearances at the event.
It has been two years since the last Ryder Cup in Ireland, where the European side embarrassed the US contingent by a final score 18? - 9?. In fact, the European side has taken the last three Ryder Cups (2006, 2004 and 2002) and Tiger hasn?t been able to do a damn thing to stop them.
As the tournament teed off this morning, the favored Europeans were listed at -140, the Americans at +110 and a tie at +1000.
The American team that teed off at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville Kentucky consists of team captain Paul Azinger, Stewart Cink, Curtis, Jim Furyk, Kim, Justin Leonard, Phil Mickelson, Kenny Perry and Weekley with Chad Campbell, Holmes, Mahan and Stricker added by Azinger.
The Euros field a team made up of captain Nick Faldo, Sergio Garcia, Soren Hansen, Padraig Harrington, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Robert Karlsson, Graeme McDowell, Justin Rose, Henrik Stenson, Lee Westwood and Oliver Wilson.
Faldo also selected Paul Casey and Ian Poulter to the team.
There will be tons of wagering opportunities throughout the weekend on all the Ryder Cup action.
Each day action presents head-to-head matchups, team vs. team betting opportunities and playing props.
The US side teed off with newcomer Anthony Kim as one of the odds-on faves (+400), in SPORTSBETTING.COM?s ?Top American Golfer? prop.
Only 23-years of age, Kim has limited experience in golf majors, finishing tied for 26th at this year?s U.S. Open, tied for 55th at the PGA Championship but he was solid at the British Open finishing tied for seventh.
Kim won this year?s Wachovia Championship and AT&T National events outright.
Phil Mickelson was also listed at +400 but has failed to capture a major this year, finishing tied for fifth at the Masters, tied for 18th and 19th at the U.S. and British Opens and tied for seventh at the PGA championship; he has taken the Northern Trust Open and Crowne Trust Plaza Invitational this year.
Sergio Garcia listed was the favorite (+350) to be the top European. Garcia was the runner-up in this year?s PGA Championship and he won this year?s Players Championship.
Another favorite (+450) to be top European is Padraig Harrington who has been hot.
Harrington took his second consecutive British Open title this year and also won the 2008 PGA Championship beating out, ironically enough, teammate Sergio Garcia and U.S. opponent Ben Curtis.

The Americans against the Europeans for some golf competition without Tiger Woods, it should be good.
Enjoy the rest of your week.
