Bettors have wide-open field for 137th British Open

No Tiger for this week?s 137th British Open means a wide-open field for PGA golf betting fans.

betED.com British Open betting odds have Sergio Garcia as a slight favorite at +950 to win the US $8.2 million tournament, one of golf?s four Majors, which gets going Thursday at the Royal Birkdale course in Southport, Lancashire, England.

World No. 1 Tiger Woods will miss the championship after knee surgery following his win at the U.S. Open. Woods, a three-time British champion, isn't expected to return to action until 2009.

betED.com has Ernie Els right behind Garcia at +975, followed by defending champion Padraig Harrington and World No. 2 Phil Mickelson, both at +1300.

Harrington defeated Sergio Garcia last year in a playoff at Carnoustie to claim his first major championship title. Harrington will be paired with former major champions Retief Goosen and Justin Leonard for the first two rounds.

Goosen is at +2400 odds while Leonard is way back at +4000.

Garcia will play with Ryuji Imada and Sean O'Hair, teeing off Thursday at 9:31 am ET and Els, the 2002 British Open champ, will tee off at 3:31 am ET, playing with Martin Kaymer and Scott Verplank.

Royal Birkdale is hosting the Open Championship for the first time since 1998, when Mark O'Meara beat Brian Watts in a playoff.

The 7,173-yard Lancashire Course at Royal Birkdale will play as a par-70 for the 2008 British Open.

TNT will air the first two days of play, starting at 7 am ET Thursday, and ABC will have coverage of rounds three and four on Saturday and Sunday, starting at 8 am ET.
