Bettors Tab Bengals in Week 2
By SPORTSBETTING.COM
After an opening weekend in the NFL that didn?t produce a single team favored by more than a touchdown, Week 2 arrives delivering big numbers liberally sprinkled throughout the card. In fact, close to half the games on the board this week at SPORTSBETTING.COM highlight a team sporting a pointspread of 7 points or more.
So who?s being asked to cover the big numbers and who?s getting the early betting action?
- By far the most popular side for early bettors has been the Cincinnati Bengals. Not only are they the team that has received the most volume, but this matchup vs. Cleveland is the most lopsided game of the week so far in terms of betting trends.
The Bengal money has come in at a 90% clip, compared to a meager 10% who are backing the host Browns. Cincy is a 7-point road favorite vs. this divisional rival and do have a record of 4-1 against the spread in their last five meetings with the Browns.
- Speaking of the Browns, their Week 1 opponent is basking in the glow of the drubbing they laid down vs. Cleveland last Sunday, and with that convincing win comes expectations ? hence the big number on the Steelers this week. Pittsburgh looked very good in that first matchup, easily handling a Brown team with serious QB issues.
Now they play their home opener as a 10-point favorite vs. the Bills. This Buffalo team has struggled to stop the run, so if they have to bring an extra body into the box for run support, Big Ben could have another day like opening weekend (four TD passes).
The betting public believes Pittsburgh is more than capable of another blowout this week, as the Steelers are attracting over 80% of the betting action in this matchup.
- Another AFC team that will have a target on them all year, both from opposing teams and bettors, are the Super Bowl champ Indianapolis Colts. They?ve been installed as 7-point road favorites facing Vince Young and Tennessee in Week 2. Young?s playmaking ability gives this Titan team a shot at victory every week, but bettors are backing Peyton Manning and his crew at a 75% clip.
Three teams that were on the losing side of the scoreboard in Week 1 have been installed as home favorites of a TD or more this week.
- Getting the nod for the biggest favorite in a week of big favorites is last year?s NFC Super Bowl rep, the Chicago Bears. The oddsmakers have hung a ?12 on them, as Kansas City continues to get very little respect from the betting public (and how can you blame them, after KC?s pitiful performance in Houston last Sunday).
Although this spread suggests the most lopsided matchup of the weekend, it isn?t the most lopsided from a betting perspective, as the Bears are only garnering 60% of the early action from SPORTSBETTING.COM bettors.
- The Jaguars were easily handled by the Titans last Sunday, but despite that performance a wager on Jacksonville still means you have to lay 10 points. That?s because they?re hosting the Atlanta Falcons, a team that didn?t look bad last week, they looked absolutely dreadful. But bettors aren?t sold on this Jag squad yet, as the action is breaking down evenly, as bettors feel the 10 points might be too much to cover for the home side.
- On Monday night the NFC East Washington Redskins bring their 1-0 mark to Philly to face the 0-1 Eagles. Philadelphia is favored by 7 points despite a weak showing in Green Bay last Sunday. The Redskins scored an overtime win at home in their opener (over Miami), however they didn?t look overly impressive themselves. But the betting public hasn?t designated one or the other as having an edge, as this one is split down the middle in terms of betting action.
Injuries are also playing a large role in where the lines are and the way they?re being bet (we?ve never seen anything like Week 1 in terms of the number of significant injuries to kick-off a season).
The Giants were decimated last Sunday in their loss to the Cowboys, with Brandon Jacobs, Osi Umenyiora and Eli Manning all leaving the contest. Early in the week, speculation was that Eli would be gone for four weeks, which had bettors looking at Green Bay. That was followed by the reports of Manning taking snaps and looking more and more like he might play. As of today ? who knows, but the betting public are starting to clearly throw their support behind Brett Favre and the Packers as a small road dog (+1.5). They?re receiving over 75% of the action in this one.
NFL Notable Numbers:
- The Seattle Seahawks are laying points on the road vs. an Arizona Cardinals team that struggled in their Monday night appearance last week. But Seattle has not been a profitable team to back on the road, as they are only 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games as a visitor.
- Another one of this week?s big favorites, the Denver Broncos are 9.5-point favorites in their home opener vs. the Oakland Raiders. Denver is 5-1-1 ATS the last seven years in their first home game of the season.
- The Sunday night matchup gives us ?must-see? TV, as the Patriots and Chargers meet in Foxboro. New England is getting 75% of the early action as a 3-point favorite. One number worth noting is that San Diego has a 7-1-1 ATS record the past nine years in its first road game of the season.
