GAME NOTES: The James Madison Dukes and Delaware Blue Hens meet for the first time on the hardwood, when these two new conference rivals meet up in Newark in Colonial Athletic Association action on Thursday. The Dukes have gotten off to a fast start this season with seven wins in their first 10 games, including four straight wins (matching the program's longest winning streak since the 1995-96 season). Last week, James Madison participated in the Spider Invitational in Richmond and brought home the tournament title with wins over Cornell (56-40) and Virginia Military (94-84). The Blue Hens have also played well of late, winning two straight games to crawl back to .500 on the season. Both recent victories came in routs, as Delaware destroyed George Mason (83-56) in league play, followed by last weekend's 20-point win over Loyola- Maryland (75-55). The Blue Hens are in their first season in the CAA.
The Dukes' 7-3 record matches the team's best 10-game start since the 1986-87 season, when the team went 9-1 to start the year. The recent win streak has been accomplished without the services of senior forward Ron Anderson (11.0 ppg, 7.0 rpg), who hasn't played since suffering a hand injury on November 22nd. However, the Dukes may get Anderson back in this game, giving them another weapon to choose from. Leading the scoring brigade for the Dukes this season is junior guard David Fanning, who is pouring in 20.9 ppg. Fanning is the team's top perimeter threat, having already amassed 33 three-pointers on the season, while connecting on 41 percent of his attempts. Other double figure averages include sophomore forward Dwayne Broyles (11.9 ppg) and junior forward Pat Mitchell (11.0 ppg). The 6-7 Mitchell is the team's top rebounder (8.9 rpg) and will certainly benefit inside with the expected return of Anderson.
If the Blue Hens want to make a splash in their new conference this season, then they will need to continue to get solid scoring from varied sources. Delaware doesn't possess a 20-point a night scorer, but the team does boast scoring depth, with five players averaging over eight points per game. Two players are averaging double figures, in Mike Ames (11.9 ppg) and Austen Rowland (10.7 ppg). They also represent the team's snipers, as the pair have combined for 44 three-pointers. The rest of the team has managed to connect on just 31 treys. Vohn Hunter, Ryan Iversen and Maurice Sessoms round out the scoring options, with 8.7, 8.6 and 8.4 ppg, respectively. In the team's most recent victory, Iversen and Mark Curry came off the bench to lead the way, combining for 25 points to break open a close game, giving the Blue Hens a comfortable win over the Greyhounds. Iversen, a 6-3 guard, led the team in scoring with 15 points, while grabbing eight boards, while Curry (a freshman forward), logged 10 points and six rebounds in just 15 minutes of action.
The Blue Hens are learning to adjust to life in a new conference, but don't expect James Madison to hold out an olive branch. The Dukes are playing some of their best basketball in recent memory and the possible addition of Anderson to the lineup may just push this team to the front of the class in the CAA.
