Bucks acquire Payton from Sonics

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ESPN.com news services

The Seattle SuperSonics have traded Gary Payton and Desmond Mason to the Milwaukee Bucks for Ray Allen, Kevin Ollie and another player, ESPN.com has learned.

The Sonics also shipped point guard Kenny Anderson to the Hornets for Elden Campbell.

Payton is one of the top point guards in the NBA. Payton is averaging 20.8 points and 8.8 assists this season for the Sonics, who snapped a six-game losing streak on Wednesday night against the Knicks. Payton scored 31 points in his last game with Seattle.

Coincidentally, the Bucks and Sonics play Friday night in a nationally-televised game on ESPN.

Payton, 34, had played for the Sonics for 13 seasons and is in the final year of a seven-year contract that pays just under $13 million this season.

Mason, 25, is in his third year with the Sonics. He was the 17th pick in the first round of the 2000 NBA Draft. He's averaging 14.1 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.

The Hornets have been looking for point guard help with Baron Davis out with chronic back spans stemming from a herniated disk and a knee injury that required surgery last month.

Davis is not expected back until next month and the Hornets are trying to solidify their spot in the playoff hunt.

New Orleans is currently in seventh place in the Eastern Conference, 5? games ahead of the Washington Wizards, who hold the eighth and final spot.
