Mavs Aquire Antoine Walker and Tony Delk from Boston

DALLAS ? The Dallas Mavericks announced today they have acquired three-time NBA All-Star Antoine Walker and Tony Delk from Boston in exchange for Raef LaFrentz, Jiri Welsch, Chris Mills and the Mavericks first round selection in the 2004 NBA Draft.

Antoine Walker
?We have been looking for a point forward since I have been here and I feel we have gotten one of the best in the league in Antoine Walker,? said Mavericks head coach/general manager Don Nelson. ?Walker is an all-around great player who will fit nicely into our system.

?We are going to miss Raef,? Nelson added. ?The Celtics are getting a terrific player in Raef as he can play the four or the five spot. He is in the best shape of his career and has been one of my best players in the preseason. He is going to have a great year for Boston. The Celtics are also getting a terrific young talent in Jiri Welsch.?

Walker has spent his entire seven-year career with Boston and has averaged 20.8 points, 8.7 rebounds and 4.2 assists in 528 career games (39.4 minutes per game). He has also appeared in 26 career playoff games and has averaged 20.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per game in those games.

Last year he averaged 20.1 points, 7.2 rebounds and 4.8 assists in 78 games (all starts) and 41.5 minutes per game. He led the team in scoring 25 times, in rebounding 29 times and in assists 35 times. He scored 20 or more points 38 times and 30 or more points 10 times. He ranked tied for fourth in the league in minutes played (3,235) and led the league in 3-point attempts with 582.

Tony Delk
Tony Delk has played for five teams ? Charlotte, Golden State, Sacramento, Phoenix and Boston ? in his seven-year NBA career. He has appeared in 432 career games and has averaged 9.1 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. Last year with Boston, he averaged 9.8 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game in 67 contests (39 starts) in 28.0 minutes per game.

LaFrentz has played the last year and a half with the Mavericks after coming to Dallas in a trade with Denver on Feb. 21, 2002. In 96 career games with the Mavericks he averaged 9.7 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.57 blocks per game.

Welsch and Mills were acquired in a nine-player trade from Golden State on August 18, 2003. Welsch averaged 11.8 points and 3.6 rebounds in five preseason games for Dallas this month. Mills did not appear in a preseason game for the Mavericks.

2 things:

If they do keep Walker, this is the starting five:

Nash
Finley
Dirk
Fortson
Walker

Nelly already said that Jamison would be the 6th man, but will use the five all stars together at the end of games.

Don't be surprised if this deal was done with another one in the works. Cuban has something under his sleeve and whether it's done in a couple of weeks or months, look for the Mavs to make another move.

Theo Ratliff.............?

I have been reading a lot on the net, mostly by the dumb people who post on the fourm at cbs that the mavs have not done this or done that. They have improved with out giving one of the big three up. J. Howard and T. Hardaway turned into the two Walker and Jamison. I like that. Def needs to improve, and I think forston and Josh Howard will help with this some. Overall I think the two moves made by the mavs this summer were very good. ;)
