bill walton is to college basketball what the unknown comic was to the gong show - a distraction when the game is boring. he manages to say things that make even the most casual fan tilt their head like a dog hearing a strange sound.

yyz - long time no see since that first madjack's vegas gathering. hope the years have been kind and all the bounces good.:0008

Doing great!

Question: How was this a boring game? Came down to last shot!

Walton, to me, is in the Chris Berman "dinosaur" category. His schtick doesn't resonate with the current three generations tuning in.

I'm particularly bothered that I cant enjoy the Indiana game. He'll probably fire up another bowl between games, and let the audience know more about Grateful Dead tunes, and 1960s hoops.

they went from talking about Sonic happy hour shakes to BW saying "Have you ever been in a sonic boom?"

theres no filter
im watching games mostly on mute , its rough.

the other announcer at one pt tried to fire himself and suggested walton should do a game with snoop dogg.

walton doesnt miss a beat , starts talking about snoops high school and then makes a mention that billie jean king went there.

I mean WTF.

It's brutal. If these two were in a bar, great. I could listen to Bill all night. But, I'm trying to watch a game, and you're fucking it up. He's not even interested in the game 90% of the time! Only time he seems to care is when a center stuffs the ball.

"Throw it down, Big Man!!!!"

Did you know "Big Man" was first used to describe Milton "Stretch" Horowitz of the Piscataway Bears, during a game in 1902?

Bill Walton: And then Jerry Garcia and I, right after the show at Shea Stadium, we were craving peanut butter M&M's, and we walked down to the local bodega, have you heard of these things, they're unique to New York City-

Jason Benetti: Timeout, Indiana.

========================

Hes been barking on air imitating dogs as well.

then these 2 gems.

?I?ve heard of stickers. I?ve heard of pot. But I?ve never heard of pot stickers.?

How many games have we played in? or officiated? or been to? or listened to on radio? or watched pre-2000?
how many games a wk do we watch these last 20 yrs, more now cuz of increased tv coverage?
Watch more now cuz we gamble more? AND we have live-betting options now?

How many have we seen over the yrs? thousands
How many of those are great games?

I'm definitely on the "Let Walton Ramble" side of the ledger...
He makes me laugh sometimes (not too many announcers do)
He brings up stuff that creates conversation in the room if I'm watching w/others...
I (almost always) enjoy the tangents his train of thought rambles down even when he does it a bit more than he should...

I know he gets a LOT of airtime during this tournament coverage every yr, but after this you're usually just gonna catch him broadcasting 1 west coast gm/wk

I usually don't enjoy the broadcasting teams much anymore, they defend poor officiating, have standard reactions responses to situations we've all seen thousands of times...

I'm in my 60s and remember watching most every gm Walton played at UCLA, one of the absolute most fundamentally sound players I've ever seen, offensively and defensively, without a doubt.
health made his NBA career less than it would've been...and he still wasn't too bad.

so I know he knows what he's talking about in hoops when the action catches his interest lol
I know I'll miss him when he's gone.
A truly unique individual that's surprisingly been allowed to broadcast sports for all these years!

If I'm watching NBA playoffs, gimme old Hubie Brown as the most informative, describing coaching and situational strategies...
But for a college game in December... I'll take Big Bill!!
and maybe... might even spark a bowl :D

GOOD LUCK GUYS AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!

I agree as well...He is very intelligent and brings a sense of whimsy along with knowledge to the broadcast.
Now Dick Vitale definitely needs to be gone. The huge difference between him and Walton is that Bill Walton is unique and you never know what he is going to say. Dick Vitale has been doing the same old boring schtick for the past 20 years. It's just diarrhea of the mouth. I can't stand watching a game he's doing. Gimme Walton all day long....

If he wants to be Garrison Keillor, that's fine. Just find another outlet.

I read it and he made some decent points until he called Walton a ?good? but injury prone pro. He almost single handed lay won a champion ship in a very competitive era in the nba. He was an excellent pro until his health gave out and very good after that. Jack Marin was a good pro
