Absolutely read "Blackjack Autumn: A True Tale of Life, Death, and Splitting Tens in Winnemucca" by Barry Meadow. Very enjoyable book. Not a teaching book though.

In terms of learning, no need really to waste money on a book. If you really want to, then pick up anything you can by Stanford Wong. Otherwise go straight to his website www.bj21.com. There are good forums on basic strategy and anything under the sun. There is also a seperate section on Basic Strategy. Under that link you will find "Rules of Blackjack" which gives you the rundown on anything you could want to learn.

Myself personally, I play strict basic strategy and progression bet. It works well and I stick with what works.

Phil Turcotte has answered this question with the best source on blackjack -- Stanford Wong. Everything Wong writes, you can take to the bank. See the bj21 website to order his materials.

As far as books on various counts, I started with "Playing Balckjack as a Business" by Lawrence Revere.

The best book for you depends on primarily where you want to play -- LV rules, Northern Nevada rules, Atlantic City multiple decks, single deck, double deck, and various derivitives of rules at different casinos. I am sure a book that would be applicable to Northern Nevada might not be the best book for those single deck blackjack games dealt downtown LV. THere's also a point of view that Atlantic City games are now unbeatable with the 8-deck shoes, lack of penetration, and no mid-show entry. So, counting may be a waste of time in some of the places you want to play.

To be honest, I rarely play blackjack anymore. I really haven't been up on it in aver ten years. I learned a lot of things from an associate who did shuffle tracking and noted the clumping effect, he was on Ken Uston's team back in the 80s. But, I forgot much of what he taught and no longer have much of a grasp of what it takes to beat the game.

Must be getting old.

Nolan is right in that the rules dictate what play you should do for what locale. On Stanfords sight, he has a great tool you can use. Plug in the local rules and bang it pops out the basic strategy chart for that.

Let me offer some unsolicited advice in no particular order:

- STICK TO BASIC STRATEGY. Fish who think they know how to play hate it when I sit down and hit a 2 vs a dealer 3. Thats fine, let them continue to lose. HIT TWOS AGAINST A THREE.

- Money management is the key. If you have no control over how many times you rebuy at a table (should be zero) then you will be a losing player in the long haul. If you buy in for $1,000 and lose, walk away. Get some air. The tables will still be there in an hour when you get back. Clear your head.

- The bad hit by the guy next to you, which caused you to bust, when the right play would have caused you to win - DOES NOT AFFECT YOU. This causes the single most debate amongst what I will call "knowledgable" and "casual-once-every-two-years" blackjack players. The cards are all in there, nice and random (clumping discussion aside). John Doe's bad play has JUST a good of a chance of hurting you as helping you, believe it or not. You cant judge a 30 minute session and say XYZ hurt me. Play 1000 hours and keep track of bad plays hurting and helping you. Take my word for it, they even out. This leads into:

- Dont belittle other players. Ive done it, weve all done it, but I really try not to. It should be fun for everyone win or lose. Which leads to:

NUMBER ONE ABOVE ALL!! --- > ENJOY YOURSELF! If you arent having fun, you shouldnt be gambling.

Cheers

No offense but when is the last time you played BJ in A.C.??????
Your info on the A.C. games being unbeatable due to 8 deck shoes ,lack of penitration and no mid shoe entry is incorrect..........I'm there once a month in the winter and at least every other weekend in the summer BLACK JACK is my game I say F**k that book any of those books.
