Over the last week the Flyers either did the most to help themselves on the NHL betting odds to win the Stanley Cup next season, or they did the most to hurt themselves and their championship chances.
The Flyers got a jump on free agency last week by acquiring goalie Ilya Bryzgalov from the Coyotes and signing him to a rich multi-year contract. However, Philly also shipped out top forwards Mike Richards and Jeff Carter in separate deals with the Kings and Blue Jackets for draft picks and younger (ie; cheaper) players.
So will the improvement between the pipes offset the loss of Richards and Carter from the forwards ranks for Philly next season? And how much does free-agent signing Jaromir Jagr, who played the last few seasons in the KHL, have left in the tank?
On the Bodog NHL odds board the Flyers are listed near the top of the Cup odds at 10/1, but still behind the Canucks (13/2), Penguins (8/1), and Bruins (9/1). Also at 10/1 are the Capitals, who made their own goalie move when free agency opened by adding former Panther Tomas Vokoun on a one-year contract.
The biggest free-agent signings over the weekend, though, were made by the Rangers, who inked center Brad Richards, and the Sabres, who overpaid to acquire the services of winger Ville Leino and defenseman Christian Ehrhoff. New York is at 35/1 on the current Bodog Stanley Cup odds, while Buffalo is at 20/1.
Two Cup longshots also were active as the free agent market opened, with the Blue Jackets adding defenseman James Wisniewski, and the Panthers signing eight players including forwards Tomas Fleischmann and Scottie Upshall and defenseman Ed Jovanovski. Both those clubs remain at 75/1 odds to win the Stanley Cup.
