In the last month we have seen a number of promising Kentucky Derby contenders drop from the upcoming race. We have also seen a number of relatively low key contenders come into the light.
To recap, Dreaming of Anna and Tiz Wonderful both dropped off the Kentucky Derby trail in mid-February. Dreaming of Anna had a experienced a disappointing show in her debut and her trainer Wayne Catalano decided to return her to grass racing. The same day, Steve Asmussen declared that Tiz Wonderful would no longer be on the trail after a minor injury.
February 23rd, we saw Exhale leaving the trail to undergo surgery that will keep him off the tracks until at least late summer. Exhale was followed by Buffalo Man when he was diagnosed with an ankle injury that although not life threatening, will not allow trainer Cam Gambolati to pursue his hopes of a Kentucky Derby champion.
E Z Warrior, another of the original top 25, has fallen off the list due to a quarter crack and while he is unbeaten, he has not raced more than six furlongs.
Added to the top 25 are Flying First Class and Officer Rocket after commendable performances in their latest races. Both seem to be headed for the Rebel Stakes on March 17th.
Notional, Liquidity and Cobalt Blue have all moved further up the watch list after performing well in their latest starts. After his win at the Risen Star Stakes, Notional has gained many more fans. Adding Great Hunter to this list, we see Doug O?Neill?s list for top contenders grow significantly.
Of the top 25, eight will be running over the next few days, a number of these at the Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream this Saturday.
