Arrowhead Stadium, one of the toughest places to play in the NFL hosts the second game of the Monday Night Football double-header. Arrowhead alone is the reason why the NFL Line favors San Diego by only 4 ? points. Otherwise, this game appears to be a mismatch.
NFL Line:
San Diego: -4 1/2 (-110)
Kansas City: +4 1/2 (-110)
Total: 44 1/2 points: Over (110), Under (110)
The San Diego Chargers begin their ?Super Bowl or Bust? season on Monday night against a team that they have absolutely owned recently. However, the Chargers are dealing with some unforeseen adversity ? suspensions, contract hold outs and injuries threaten to make this a closer game than the Chargers would like. They clearly are not the NFL Line-up that many think they are.
San Diego heads into week 1 with an offense that is still in the top quarter of the NFL. Philip Rivers has demonstrated that he is an elite pivot. 6 foot 5 inch Malcolm Floyd will be his primary target as will old reliable Antonio Gates. Patrick Crayton was acquired last week and will likely see some playing time too. Concerns on the offensive side of the ball include the suspension/contract squabble of Vincent Jackson and the hold out of All-Pro Left Guard Marcus McNeil whose job it is to protect Rivers? blind side. It appears that the Chargers have drawn an NFL Line in the sand and are willing to wait out their players.
Ryan Matthews, who impressed during the preseason will take over from LaDainian Tomlinson and will be backed up by Uber-quick Darren Sproles. The San Diego offense has the luxury of facing last year?s 30th ranked offense and it?s a good thing given the uncertainty on the squad.
The San Diego defense may be without Shawne Merriman in Week 1 which is a huge blow. The Chargers have an excellent set of linebackers who will be called upon often to neutralize the Chiefs strong running game and short passing attack.
The Kansas City Chiefs made some moves in the offseason, but not with its on-field personnel. Romeo Crennell was brought in to coordinate the defense and Charlie Weis is now in charge of the offense. Along with Todd Hailey, a whole NFL Line of New England coaching staff Alums is now running the show. They have a lot of work to do with a team that has won a combined 10 games over the past three seasons.
Matt Cassell enters his second season as the quarterback for the Chiefs and he will have a full arsenal at his disposal. Dwayne Bowe appears poised for a comeback season, Chris Chambers is a legitimate threat and newly drafted Dexter McCluster is a speedy weapon that should help Kansas City improve their passing statistics. They figure to be a huge part of the game plan against the Chargers sketchy pass defense.
Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones will be one of the better rushing tandems in the NFL this year but could be stymied by San Diego?s defensive front. Still, they will get their yards, control the clock and make some plays in this game.
Defensive coordinator Romeo Crennell should have an immediate impact on the league?s 30th ranked defense. Their poor pass defense will be bolstered by rookie Eric Berry. Things won?t be so easy for the Chargers passing game in this game ? the Chiefs appear motivated and will certainly bring pressure under Romeo Crennell?s tutelage.

The Chiefs will be looking to rediscover their Arrowhead dominance and on National Television should be at their best. I expect the Chiefs to be competitive throughout but ultimately be overwhelmed in the end. Although this game may seem like a mismatch, the Chiefs may actually have an advantage in the running game, and potentially on the defensive side of the ball. San Diego is just too tough however and will do enough to barely cover the spread.
