I just picked up a Microsoft Surface RT tablet on ebay, a company was running the refurbs at 169 for the 32 gb version. Thing came in and was brand new. They are also selling the keyboard cover / case for 39 if you buy them together. The thing is awesome.

it ALL depends on what he wants out of his tablet ... if he is just looking for an e-reader, there are plenty out there under $100 ... if he wants wifi then the prices greatly escalate

I wouldnt buy an iPad unless you are very tech oriented and plan on using it like a laptop

I bought the original Kindle Fire the week it came out ... have only used the wifi like 5 times because the search engine is so weak its not worth the trouble ... I have heard that the new ones have been GREATLY improved and rival iPads

but if you are looking for just an e-reader, I would go with the basic Kindle which they are showing for $69

If you are like most of us and already spend too much time in front of a computer screen, then definitely go with any basic Kindle. The e-ink is so much easier to read and better for your eyes than reading on the Kindle Fire, iPad or any other tablet.

Your e-reader is for reading, and there is no better device to read on than the Kindle.

I confirm this, if your eyes get tired or strained from looking at LCD screens too often, the E-Ink Kindles don?t contribute to this strain. And they are cheap and the batteries last for weeks and weeks (exponentially longer than a tablet, which you will eventually need to tether to an outlet).
The only caveats being:
1) They aren?t tablets in any sense of the word, so anything beyond reading a book is a non-starter. Although, in fact, I find this to be a good way to replicate the ?consuming? nature of reading a book, you won?t get any notification of new mail, or updates, be tempted to browse the web or fuck about on madjacks.
2) You need to have ambient light to read E-Ink kindles. In a pitch black room you won?t be able to see the screen. So, you need an equivalent amount of light as you would to read a book. (But this is basically why they are great for people with eye-strain).

Do you remember the name of the company selling them? That's a nice price, but I couldn't find them.
