here is a review of an investment book, will have updates on the Energy thread (best to wait, after the carnage will be some great deals in the oil/gas stocks), and on the CP spinoffs that are doing very well but seem a little rich at this point.

will write some more puts when the market (if) falls some more. written quite a few in November and should wait to see how they do, so far so good.

this thread will be on investment books, if anyone has an investment book- about business feel free to post why you liked the book or cannot stand it.

finally finished reading "A million a Minute" by Hillary Davis.
"Inside the world of Securities trading- The men, The women, the money that make the markets work"

published in 1998 $27US $40cdn, picked it up for $3 cdn. in early September picked up two other books and will have reviews sometime this year. note Notradamus books in September were selling out with waiting lists in the hundreds. so I was able to get some bargains on some investment books that had to be cleared out, after the Chapters sale.

the book is 278 pages, not including Trade speak (some definations, done very well) and notes where the quotes or some information came from also well done.

The book deal with many topics including computer trading, short selling, fraud, and also some of the people behind the markets.

This book was not a page turner but had a great deal of information. The profiles should have been longer such as the one on Bloomberg now the mayor of New York.

She also at the start of the book goes overboard in the praise of the people who work in the industry, at some point you feel they should all be considered saints.

Great book for under $10 and a good general read on the investment markets. Only problem with the book is it sometimes hard to get through certain chapters and the general flow of the book.

"An impresive, accessible, up to date, and sometimes exhilarating study fo the free-market warriors who make up the international trading community.... This is an excellent book."
Financial Times

Generally agree good information and in general well done not just as much fun to read as Barbarians at the Gate, or Dumb Money. ect.

next review GREED by Deborah Thompson, yes another book I bought for $3 cdn. in September. looks good.

two quick reviews

GREED by Deborah Thompson and The Passions of Howard Hughes By Terry Moore and Jerry Rivers

Greed by Deborah Thompson is a well written book about all of the scams that take place, some many are aimed at the elderly and the lonely. However some scams involved targeting small and large businesses. Also discussed are rogue traders and how large institutions got ripped off.

Every chapter has a different story and 249 pages, written in 1999 has older stories but not dated and the six- ten pages of photos in the middle. good glosary.

rating 6.5-10 (out of print) published Viking

The Passions of Howard Hughes By Terry Moore and Jerry Rivers

Howard Hughes was one of the greatest/interesting characters in the history of mankind

this book has good photos but mostly contains bad writing..about his love affairs with Monroe, Rita Hayworth, Bette Davis, about six others. Not enough about him as a pilot, businessman, political aspirations, golfer (had a 1 handicap so gave the sport up).

half of the book is tabloid trash.....garbage...

rating 2-10 ( I am in a good mood)......maybe time to watch Citizen Kane (loosly based on Howard Hughes...he hated Mr. Wells...great movie..)

Next reviews a book about futures trading, and a book by Jacquie McNish.

The Big Score - great book

The Big Score - great book

The BIG SCORE by Jacquie McNish

some reviews

"simply the best Canadian business book that I have read in many years." David Baines Vancouver Sun

"An engaging writer....The Big Score reads like a thriller" globe and mail

" Gripping, witty narrative...a riveting, coherent portrait of the mad world of miners, prospectors, claim-grabers, and penny stock promoters....Even if business isn't your bag, The Big Score is a satisfying read". The National Post

"Exhaustively researched and entertainingly presented...a must read" northern life

note: Before I go on with this review should state I lived through the great mining boom / mania that captured Canada in the 1990s. I still have the information packet that Diamonds fields sent me in the summer of 1994. Mainly talks about there African mining properties, in passing they state " The companys other diamond activities include exploration on properties in Arkansas, Labrador and Saskatchewan. At Labrador all though they did not realize it for a while they found a multi- billion dollar nickel deposit. anyways my average cost was $11.95 and would gladly relive the mining mania so this will probably effects my overal review somewhat.

This is a great, great, great book. It tells the story in great detail of one of the biggest mineral discoveries Voisey bay. The cast of characters in the book is incredible I mean even Bubba (bill Clinton) and his wife are in the book, however briefly. The one hour meeting between Clinton and Friedland would have been interested to hear (could probably show it on Pay per view).

Most of the book is about the discovery and how Diamond Fields tried to stay alive and later auction of the mineral property to the highest bidder.

If you do not care about mining you still read the book here are some reasons....

1. how junior companies carry out field trips/presentations to impress investment professionals.

2. how junior companies operate
3. one of the most interesting negotiations, ever.
4. how companies work, how some people get pushed out and others gain control.
5. how the media is played

many more things to learn by reading the book.a great book. 356 pages US $15.95 Cdn. $21.95 Doubleday Canada
great index, notes, even a section called cast of characters, great for this book and should be in more. available at Chapters and probably most other book stores. Great book and great read.

rating 9.5 - 10
