What the hell is Blake doing last nite.I've got a "luv" game on the line with the terps -6.Blake is in "la-la" land turning the ball over, shooting running jumpers, air balls, and hitting the front of the rim every time. His passes made me grab my armchair and clinch everytime. But in the end the Terps prevailed and box didn't get "skunked" since he lost all his other games.Thank god it covered and made all those losses go away.[somewhat]
Didn't see any games last nite except MD-Kenty.Had our school play last nite and had to be there. The 1st half of the play was outstanding. My school puts on the best shows in the state.Five or 6 of our kids go to the NYU's on scholarships for music.During intermission I ran into my office and turned on the computer.Conn beat SIU.Damn,I loved Conn.Love Calhoun.Love Gordon. But noooo,I found something capping that gave SIU the advantage.Even though Conn has had a lot of sucess in the Dome.Damn..

The play sucked after intermission.I don't think our kids hit the right note once. And I know I don't need to check in at Bellvue in NYC.The Conn results had nothing to do with our students performances in the 2nd half. And that is what I said to myself driving home listening to the start of the terps game. I kept saying it over and over. Page 1

Many of you know the area I live in was hit very hard by Osami and what happened on 9/11.The town next to me lost 8 firemen. All 8 came from the same parrish where all my kids played CYO basketball for the past 20 yrs.My school lost one fireman and he is still missing. His wife and 3 kids live next door to our school nurse and 3 teachers.
Last nite at the play our nurse was telling me about what the Paris fire dept did.
The Paris Fire dept has paid for a trip to France for many of the NYFD famlies that lost their loved ones. All expenses paid for one week. The kids are all going to Euro-Disney,Paris,etc.I'm not sure if that story will make the papers. But France is not on my "most favored list" after the refused our bombers airspace when we bombed Quadafy. So it is nice to hear a story like that. They are leaving today for Paris. Page 2

My last boring ass story has to do with a NY coach that just won the state championship. He is being fired after todays Federation game.He has already won the State championship. Before I print his story I'll tell you what happened with me and his wife.
Blind-Brook HS is 26-0 and playing in the state finals. At our coaches conf. the nite before Jeff Charney is the topic of discussion. We hear all the stories about him and what his B of Ed is doing. He is fired as soon as the season ends.Right after he cuts down the nets.He did nothing but bench some players the yr before who had parents on the board.
Last sat afternoon me and my fellow coaches are sitting right behind him and his bench. His team goes out and gets a 15 pt lead in 5 minuts.A timeout is called by the other coach.A guy sitting 2 people away from me yells out"fire his ass,he can't coach".A lady is sitting right next to me who is with this yeller.I ask her "ma'm do you really think he should be fired".Her answer to me was"I hope not,he's my husband".And the guy next to her was being sarcastic. The whole game she told me the entire story. It is unreal. He did nothing.I heard last nite on the radio that his team was considering boycotting the Fed games this week in Glenn Falls.I pasted todays article on the coach and the game.He also will be voted the NY State HS coach of the Yr.We all voted for him. It's an award I won in '95-96.And still is the only coach in NY history to win it and not win a state title.I'm so proud of that distinction.Page 3

Here is the article.I did tell his wife to call "60 Minuts" because it would make a great story. The Stein kid in the article is going to NYU on an academic scholarship.he scored 1600 on his bds.

THE JOURNAL NEWS

(Original publication: 03/23/02)

GLENS FALLS ? It wasn't until Thursday morning, just hours before the team bus left for Glens Falls, that Blind Brook decided for sure it would participate in the Federation tournament.

Several members of the team, including leading scorer Jason Stein, had considered forfeiting the game as a show of solidarity for embattled coach Jeff Charney.

Charney will be fired once the season is over because of a dispute with some parents over playing time that dates back to last season. The Rye Neck Board of Education has said it will not review the situation despite numerous requests from supporters of the veteran coach.

"I wanted to play and I told the kids that," Charney said. "Some of the kids and their parents were very heated over what the board said but (forfeiting) wouldn't have been right."

Said junior Kevin Aughavin: "Once Coach Charney said he wanted to play, we all wanted to play. We support him and wanted to do something but the best thing is to play."

count me in with barfly and loophole. thanks for your contributions!

and, as far as blake goes; he's always doing that chit. i think he wants to join the globtrotters.

and, williams encourages blake to shoot more because he's often left unguarded because the teams that are familiar with maryland KNOW he doesn't shoot much. this might be a good reason to shoot more in acc games but against kentucky? kentucky was guarding him, so wtf is he doing 'forcing' shots?

Good stuff as always. I remember you saying in a previous post that youv'e been going to the class a public championships at glen falls for quite some time and was curious if you remember the 1986 games. The reason I ask is because that year a kid from my high school (Shenendehowa) was being heavily recruited by all the big name schools and at the half of the semi-finals I actually got to meet coach K who was sitting with Bobby Knight, it was a nice experience for me at the time only being a freshman talking with those guys. My question for you is, do you know who the player from my high school was? I will give you a couple of hints:#1) He went on to be named co-mr. basketball in NY with King Rice (who went on to play @UNC) and #2) he is the 1st person ever to play in four final fours, some of the players on his teams I'm quite sure you've heard of:G Hill,C Laettner,B Hurley,A Abdelnaby, and others. By the way Shenendehowa lost that year in the finals to a team who had a pretty good player of their own Kenny Anderson of Archbishop Malloy.
Boy those days were fun.

For being such a highly regarded recruit, his career at Duke (even though he went to 4 Final Fours) was dissapointing.

disappointing in terms of not becoming an NBA player, I guess but he didn't have those type of skills anyway. He was co-captain of quite possibly the best 4 years of modern time collegiate athletics. He was part of a team that won the national championship. Although his minutes were limited, due to the star quality of the players on those teams he was a solid contributer. In fact it was his play on Larry Johnson on the defensive end of the floor that really nutralized him and we all know how that became one of the best upsets ever. As far as disappointing, I don't think so, Greg went on to play for pay in Europe and runs several camps locally, had he gone to a lesser school he possibly could have put up some nicer numbers but I think he did alright. He is the best this area has ever seen, although Sam Perkins played in our conference he was a city bred kid.

Hoops,of course I remember.
greg koubek. What a nice player. And he had his partner Sullivan who I loved.I think he went to Yale or Brown to play.Koubeck should of gone to a Mid-major.He would of avg.15 -20 pts a game.he goes to Duke and gets lost. How's this for irony.Koubeck holds the NY record for most FG's in 2 games. But my kid breaks his record and almost doubles Gregs. My kid held the record until Adonle Foyle broke his.In fact my kid held 7 scoring records.Only one still stands. FG%.He shot 17-21 and 18-22 in a 2 game series.
I loved King Rice.what a great passer.
You Shenendhowa fans were nuts.Everyone wearing green.A sea of green. I played there in '88 and 89 and 95'.Won the 1st games every yr but lost the finals by 9,5 and 4.

Thank you guys for the nice comments today.

greg was a great player.....but i think jake thomas will out do gregs legacy of best play to come out of capital district. thomas should be a shoe in for NBA if he plays all 4 years....has a good work ethic.....

Box what do you think about some of sch'dy teams that won the state champioships the past few years
willie dean..Purdue
jake thomas...Texas
Jason Mckreith....Rice
and four others that went to lower d-1 schools

He was fortunate enough to be a member of some great teams on Duke..but for a McDonald's All-American and co-player of the year in NY, averaging 12 mintues and 5 points per game for his college career was a bit of a dissapointment. As Box said, if he went to a smaller conference/school his personal numbers would have been much better. But I'm sure he wouldn't have traded that for all those Final Four appearances.

C-note,
you guys do have some solid b-ball players.last yrs team was great.Mckrieth had a huge yr at Rice.thomas at Texas speaks for itself.Section 2[Capital region]is one of the best in the state. Many D-1 players have come out of the area. And of course tons of D-2 and 3's.
Many moons ago before the state tourney it was divided into 2 champions. In 1977 they combined the state. We won the half title twice. The games were held in your home town,Sch'dy.We stayed at the Ramada Inn down the block from Union College.UC had a beautiful gym with a wood roof.I remember instead of the bus driving us the few blocks we dribbled over there.Ruined all my leather balls on the sidewalk. One of my many errors. But we won both games so I could care less.
What's the name of the place that everyone eats lunch at.Real popular for hot dogs and hamburgers.Has a counter with the stools.Might of closed down because i'm talking the late 70's.I took my team there after we won.

taking Tenn Tech +10 or 11 today. GL

Box not sure what hotdog joint you are taling about...There are 2 famous ones in my book. One is Newest lunch on albany street and the other is Mike's Hot dogs. I know both have been around since the 50's and fit the stool description. Both are great places!!! They both are also about a mile or so from the Union campus. Matter of fact I am taking my girlfriend to newest for lunch today :).....you can't beat a good greasy meal before ncaa tip off....lol.....

I have been following you post for about 2 years now on the other sites...Its nice to see you are posting here as well. You have some of the best stories I have ever heard. They all contain great learning lessions on life...Always look forward to you posts...

Your right I should have mentioned Brendan O'sullivan who was the backbone of that team who always took a back seat to Greg in the recognition department. O'sullivan ended up playing at Dartmouth where he was a four year starter and had a nice career their. Shen was wild in those days, once known as the "Big Green Machine" for our highly respected football program Koubek and O'sullivan put the basketball program on the map.
If you don't mind me asking what high school did your son play at? just curious.

Both strong plays today.
Kent St +3.5 over Indiana
Both good defenses.Kent beat them lyr.Think Fife's fathers quote or misquote about Huffman not being a D-1 player comes back to haunt them.

OU -6 over Mizzou.
They have beaten them 8 str.times in the past 5 yrs.Mizzou has its greyhounds in Rush,Gilbert, etc. But OU has greyhounds and a bull mastiff. That's the difference.Pound the ball inside and do what they do best in outside shooting. An OU plays better defense then UCLA.Mizzou relies on quickness. But OU negates some of that because they are quicker.
GL

Checkraiser,I knew O'Sullivan played for an Ivy school. He really impressed me.When I said my "kid" I meant my player I coached. Can you e-mail me.

hoops, your right. It's really up to the indivual.Duke degree doesn't look to bad on a wall. But when we watched him we all were surprised that Duke loved him.Sometimes coaches see things that others don't. GL

Perkins was an implant not from the area originally
Chuck Dukes of Colonie was a great college back at BC but didn't get much of a chance on the pro level
Dan Peltier of shen is the best baseball player to come out of ND in some time, he still holds almost all statistical records imagineable their and did make the Texas Rangers big league club on a few different occasions, in fact Rusty Greer and Peltier fought for the last outfield positon in the organization in the springs of 91, 92 and obviously Greeer not only won the spot he has become a very solid major league player.
