British Open comes at perfect time for sports bettors
In what is the slowest week of the year in professional sports, there is one bright spot: the 139th British Open Championship, the third of pro golf?s four annual majors.
And there?s a familiar name at the top of the list of favorites in British Open Odds at betED.com sportsbook: World No. 1 Tiger Woods, who is at +375 moneyline odds to win his 15th major.
Next is World No. 2 Phil Mickelson at +900 followed by No. 6 Ernie Els and No. 9 Rory Mcilroy, both at +1400. Lee Westwood, currently No. 3 in the world, rounds out the top five favorites at +1600.
betED.com also has a great mix of British Open Prop Bets, like: Will there be a hole in one? (Yes, +160; No, -210). Or, will there be a playoff? (Yes, +260; No, -320).
And if you don?t want to wait until Sunday to cash in, you can bet on the first-round leader. Woods is at +800, followed by Mickelson at +2000, and a large group at +2500: Els, Westwood, Mcilroy, Justin Rose and Padraig Harrington.
Woods has won the British Open and its coveted claret jug the last two times the Old Course at St. Andrews has hosted the Open, back in 2000 and 2005. But for the first time ages, Woods has to take a serious look over his should in the World Golf Rankings. Mickelson, Woods arch-rival who won this year?s Masters tournament, can leapfrog Woods into the No. 1 overall spot with a win this week.
At the 2009 Open, the legendary Tom Watson had the lead going into the final hole on Sunday but ended up losing a playoff to Stewart Cink.
TV coverage will be provided by ESPN and ABC all four days starting at 4 am ET on Thursday and Friday, 7 am ET on Saturday, and 6 am ET Sunday.
This marks the 27th time the Old Course at St. Andrews, known as the "Home of Golf," will host the Open.
